We dive into the differences in powertrain, underpinnings, features and more between the two

Hero MotoCorp just unveiled India’s first adventure maxi-scooter, the Xoom 160 at EICMA 2023. Honda started the affordable adventure scooter trend with the ADV150, which was then replaced by the Honda ADV160. Here’s how the desi adventure scooter compares against the Japanese one:

Design

Design-wise, the Hero Xoom 160 has an overall sharper design language compared to the bulkier lines on the Honda ADV160. It has a slimmer split-LED headlight design than the Honda’s beefy split setup. The Xoom 160’s front-end is sharper and has a small beak-like fender sticking out underneath the headlight setup. The seat on the Honda ADV160 is more contoured on the rider's side and is relatively flat for the pillion while the Xoom 160 gets a comparatively flatter seat design. Both scooters get a sharp, raised tail section. The exhaust on the Honda scooter looks more premium, though.

Powertrain

The Hero Xoom is powered by a 156cc, single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine producing a rather disappointing 14PS and 13.7Nm. The Honda ADV160, on the other hand, gets a 157cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine producing 16.04PS and 14.7Nm - pretty decent for its class.

Underpinnings

Most of the details regarding the underpinnings of the Hero Xoom 160 have not been revealed yet. But, we can see from the images that it gets a telescopic fork and dual shock absorber suspension setup, along with a disc brake at the front and a drum unit at the rear. It has a kerb weight of 141kg and comes equipped with 14-inch wheels with block-patterned MRF Zapper Kurve tyres.

The Honda ADV160, on the other hand, comes equipped with 31mm telescopic fork and twin gas-charged shock absorbers (both from Showa) suspension setup along with a single 240mm front disc and 131mm rear drum brake setup with dual-channel ABS. Some markets do offer a rear disc brake on the maxi-scooter. It gets a 14-inch front and 13-inch rear wheel setup and a kerb weight of 133kg. The lighter kerb weight along with extra power and torque should make it the superior one when it comes to performance, at least theoretically.

Features

Features-wise, the Hero Xoom 160 comes equipped with i3S Silent Start technology and keyless ignition along with opening the seat remotely. The company hasn’t revealed more details of the scooter, but we can see cutouts on the floorboard spine, presumably for the fuel tank cap. We can also see an apron cubbyhole, and the underseat storage is likely to be fairly generous. The scooter also gets a full-LCD instrument cluster, likely with smartphone connectivity and navigation.

The Honda ADV160 on the other hand, gets an adjustable windscreen, an underseat storage of 27 litres, keyless ignition, a basic traction control system, idling stop system, USB charging port in the apron-mounted glovebox, negative LCD instrument cluster, and a smart key system.

Price and Availability

The Honda ADV160 is not sold in India and is unlikely to come anytime soon. It seems like Hero heard many scooter enthusiasts’ prayers and has made sure the newly unveiled  Hero Xoom 160 is in a near-production ready level. It is expected to be launched in early 2024, likely with a price tag of Rs 1.45 lakh (ex-showroom).
