Although the 2018 Monster 821 looks more muscular than ever, it is less powerful than the outgoing version

Ducati India has announced that it will launch its 2018 BSIV-complaint Monster 821 on May 1, 2018. The mid-sized bike, which sits in between Ducati’s Monster 797 and Monster 1200, gets some subtle design changes and electronic updates.

To begin with, the updated Monster 821 looks more muscular than the outgoing model. Even the tail section is a lot sleeker and slimmer than before. The new Monster 821 borrows elements like the LED headlamp and a full-color TFT instrument console from its elder sibling, the Monster 1200.

As for the electronic updates, the Monster 821 comes armed with Ducati’s Safety Pack, a three-level Bosch ABS, an eight-level traction control system and three different riding modes - Urban, Touring and Sport. In addition, it receives a quickshifter and slip-assist clutch.

The Ducati Monster 821 draws power from a BSIV-compliant 821cc, 90-degree, L-Twin Testastretta engine mated to a 6-speed gearbox. When compared to its predecessor, the 2018 version has a power deficit of 2PS, which brings the total power output down to 110PS. Peak torque is now rated at 86Nm.

Suspension duties are handled by 43mm USD forks and an adjustable monoshock at the rear, which have been carried forward from the outgoing model. It’s the same story with the brakes as well as the Monster 821 is equipped with Brembo 320mm dual discs at the front and a single 245mm disc at the rear.

Considering the segment it will compete in, we expect the Monster 821 to be priced around Rs 10 Lakh (ex-showroom), which puts it directly against the Triumph Street Triple S, Kawasaki Z900, Yamaha MT-09 and the Suzuki GSX-S750. Ducati dealerships across the country have already started accepting bookings at a refundable amount of Rs 1 lakh. With a waiting period of about a month, customers are likely to receive their machines in the first week of June.
