TVS Apache RTR 160 4V: Variants Explained

Comes in four variants, and here’s which one you should choose

If you've been eyeing the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V, you'll know there's more than one version to choose from. TVS sells it in four variants: RM Disc, Single Channel ABS, Dual Channel ABS with USD, and a top-spec USD with TFT version, and the price difference between the cheapest and the priciest is Rs 20,000. So, what do you get for the extra money? Let's break it down.

The biggest change is up front. The base Single Channel ABS trim sticks with a regular telescopic fork, while the two trims above it get a 37mm upside-down (USD) fork instead. You get multiple colours across the range to choose from; we’ve broken down each colour with its price and variant availability.

The same goes for braking. The Single Channel ABS bike only has ABS working on the front wheel. The top variants get you covered on the rear wheel as well with Dual Channel ABS. You also get rear-wheel lift protection, which keeps the back of the bike firmly on the ground if you slam on the front brake. We’ve explained everything about this bike in detail through images.

The dashboard is where the top USD with TFT variant really stands out. As the name suggests, it gets the 5-inch colour screen, and with it comes turn-by-turn navigation and traction control. The traction control is switchable, so you can turn it off when you want to. The other three trims get a basic LCD unit and no traction control at all.

What Stays The Same

The good thing is, the engine stays the same across the range. Every single trim uses the same 159.7cc oil-cooled engine, putting out 17.55 PS and 14.73 Nm in Sport mode (a touch less, 15.64PS and 14.14Nm, in the gentler Urban and Rain modes). You also get the same 5-speed gearbox, the same slipper clutch, and identical tyres front and rear across the board. Even things like the LED lighting and the chassis are shared. For a better understanding checkout our detailed explainer of features for this one.

Which One Should You Buy?

If most of your riding is around the city and features like rear ABS or a fancy screen aren’t a dealbreaker for you, the Single Channel ABS trim gets the job done without making you pay for extras you probably won't use. If you want better braking and the USD fork without paying extra for the TFT, the Dual Channel ABS with USD makes the most sense. And if you actually want traction control and navigation on your dash, and don't mind paying for it, the TFT variant is the one worth stretching your budget for.
