Bajaj Now Exports More Bikes Than It Sells In India

The company has already received a positive response in regions like Nigeria, East Africa, Bangladesh and Nepal
- Bajaj’s export figures grew by 19 per cent in January.

The Indian two-wheeler segment has been hit by one of the worst slowdowns ever. Almost every two-wheeler manufacturer has been affected by this downturn. But Bajaj Auto has found a way to steer clear from this storm. The Pune-based bike maker increased its exports, which helped it to balance out the fall in domestic sales. In fact, the manufacturer’s export figures have surpassed its domestic sales.

As per the manufacturer, its exports grew by 19 per cent in January while domestic sales dropped by 22 per cent. According to reports, Bajaj saw a decline of 14 per cent in domestic two-wheeler sales during April-January. However, its exports grew by 10 per cent in the same time frame, which helped the company to limit its overall decline in sales to 4 per cent.

“The last 2-3 quarters have been quite rock-steady. And we expect the same thing going forward. The real driver for growth is Africa, particularly Nigeria and East Africa. These regions are powering the growth of Africa and actually for the entire international business,” said Rakesh Sharma, Chief Commercial Officer & Executive Director, Bajaj Auto.

As far as the Indian market is concerned, Bajaj is now focusing on updating its entire lineup of two-wheelers to meet the upcoming BS6 emission norms. The brand has already launched the Pulsar 150 BS6 and a few BS6 motorcycles have already been spotted at dealerships, so we believe Bajaj could update its lineup well before the April 1 deadline.
