Triumph Scrambler 400 X (2023-2025)

Triumph has hiked the prices of all of its 400cc bikes in India.

The Scrambler 400 X is the second bike to come out of the partnership between Triumph and Bajaj. The styling is similar to the Speed 400, but it has many differences that give it mild off-road capabilities and a more rugged stance. There are hardly any Scrambler-style motorcycles in India in this segment so for those that do not want a full-blown ADV, this makes perfect sense.

I have spent a lot of time with the Scrambler 400 X, and in my opinion, it is one of the most versatile motorcycles to consider under the Rs 3 lakh (ex-showroom) mark. It has an amazing do-it-all character and is a desirable choice, considering its affordable price tag. Here is an in-depth review of the bike, based on over 8,000 kilometres of riding in various conditions.

Triumph Scrambler 400X: Design  

The Scrambler 400 has a simple, retro design with a well-sculpted 13-litre fuel tank and has the overall silhouette of the larger 900 and 1200 models. At the front, the round LED headlight is covered with a grille for a more rugged look. The handlebar is a steel unit compared to the  aluminium one on the Speed 400, and they also get hand guards attached as standard. Adding on to the Scrambler theme, the panel on the left side has been replaced with an oval metal plate with Scrambler 400 X branding. Towards the rear, it gets a split-seat setup and at the bottom is a rugged metal bash-plate. Compared to 17-inch alloy wheels at both ends on the Speed 400, the Scrambler 400 X gets a 19-inch alloy wheel at the front and a 17-inch alloy wheel at the rear with block-pattern tyres.

Triumph Scrambler 400X: Colours

Back when the bike was first launched, there were only three colour schemes available. In 2025, we now have six colour options to choose from, including Matt Khaki Green/Fusion White, Baja Orange/Aluminium, Volcanic Red/Phantom Black, Pearl Metallic White/Phantom Black, and Phantom Black/Silver Ice. My personal favourite is the red and black scheme as it stands out well with the golden, inverted forks. Triumph dealerships are also offering customised tank options for an additional cost, which is good for riders who want personalisation. 

Triumph Scrambler 400X: Build Quality

The fit-and-finish is really premium considering the price point of the bike. It does feel like a way more expensive bike than it really is, so great job from Triumph and Bajaj for keeping the quality in check. Compared to the speed, the Scrambler 400 X gave me a proper big-bike feel as it is a larger and taller motorcycle.

Triumph Scrambler 400X: Convenience Features

The bike gets a digi-analogue console where the speedometer is an analogue unit that has a small LCD attached to it. This unit is pretty straightforward to read, except for the techometer. And finally, it gets a USB-charging port. 

Unfortunately, it misses out on Bluetooth connectivity features and that might be a dealbreaker for many. I love the simplistic approach that the bike takes. I only wish that it had got a twin-pod instrument console as it would have made it look even classier.

Triumph Scrambler 400X: Safety Features

The bike gets dual-channel ABS with an off-road mode where the rear ABS can be disabled. Additionally, it also gets a switchable traction control system, which you do not really need but it is a good safety net that does work quite well when it kicks in. A switch on the left can be used to toggle through the screens and switch off the Traction Control or rear ABS.

Triumph Scrambler 400X: Rider Comfort

The footpegs are not too far ahead or behind giving them a neutral riding position. The seat height stands at 835mm, making it 40mm taller than the Speed 400. With my 5' 7" stature, the bike was a little too tall and I was not able to flat foot to the ground. Shorter riders should keep this in mind as it might get a little difficult in stop-go traffic and while taking U-turns. The seat itself is flat, wide, and supportive so longer rides are possible. What might come in the way for some riders who want to tour is the lack of wind protection.

With a kerb weight of 185kg, the Scrambler 400 X becomes 9kg heavier than the Speed 400 but it still feels like a light motorcycle to move around. The handlebar is wide and raised which gives good leverage and standing up on the pegs to tackle trails feels natural and comfortable. Taller riders might need handlebar risers, but for my height, the setup is perfect off-road. 

Triumph Scrambler 400X: Pillion Comfort

There’s no backrest or cowl, so longer distances might require added cushioning or a tail rack for storage as it is a sleek motorcycle. In the city, a pillion will find the decent-sized seat and chunky grab rails comfortable for short commutes. 

Triumph Scrambler 400X: Engine

It makes use of a 398.15cc, liquid-cooled motor in the same state of tune as the Speed 400; it churns out 40PS at 8000rpm, has a peak torque of 37.5Nm at 6500rpm, and is paired with a six-speed gearbox. The main change is a smaller 14-tooth front sprocket compared to the 15-tooth sprocket on the Speed 400, while the rear remains the same with a 43-tooth sprocket. Apart from that, it gets an upswept, twin-tip exhaust unit that has a raspier exhaust note to suit its Scrambler character. 

Triumph Scrambler 400X: City Performance

This engine is really good for city riding. Just like the Speed 400, the throttle response is crisp, the clutch action is really light and the gearbox is slick. With the smaller sprocket, the Scrambler 400 X has even better low-end torque, making it zip through traffic very easily and it surely feels like a more lively motorcycle. The engine is also very tractable so cruising in the city at 40kmph in 5th gear is possible. It feels in its element when kept in the mid-range rpms and with all of the low-end performance on tap, it is also quite the wheelie-friendly hooligan when you want it to be. 

Triumph Scrambler 400X: Highway Performance

Out on the highway, the bike is easily able to maintain 110kmph without feeling stressed. Pushing to 120kmph is when a few vibrations will be felt at the bars and the footpegs but it does feel really stable at high speeds. I did not find it to be an issue but some riders might find the lack of wind protection a deal breaker. 

Triumph Scrambler 400X: Mileage

The bike gave me a mileage of around 20-22kmpl with a mix of riding in the city and the highway. With a 13-litre tank, it offers a range of around 250 kms, ideal for daily commuting, weekend getaways, and mild trail rides.

Triumph Scrambler 400X: Handling

Cornering feels really natural on the Scrambler 400 X as it tips in easily and powers out in a stable manner. Despite the light weight, it feels stable when fully leaned over. In traffic, it is quick on its feet and allowed me to get through gaps confidently because of the tall stance. The wheels are wrapped in dual-purpose MRF tyres that do a decent job on the road and through light off-road trails. But if a rider wants better tyres for wet roads or hardcore offroading, a tyre swap would be suggested. It would have been nice if India got the bike with Metzeler Karoo tyres which are equipped on the UK-spec motorcycles.

Triumph Scrambler 400X: Brakes

The brakes work decently but I would have liked a little more bite at the lever as it felt a bit spongy. The Scrambler makes use of organic brake pads and from my experience, they were worn out in 3000kms. Swapping these out for sintered brake pads from the Speed 400 drastically improved the front brake feel. The bike also gets switchable ABS so the rear wheel can be locked, which is a nice addition for experienced riders.

Triumph Scrambler 400X: Ride Quality

The front end gets 43mm, golden inverted forks, and at the rear is an offset monoshock unit. Both ends get 150mm of travel, which has given the bike a fair amount of off-road capability. The setup worked well to provide me with a plush feel through bad sections of roads. The rear might feel a bit stiff when hitting potholes at higher speeds, but I find that it overall, strikes a good balance between spirited cornering and tackling unknown terrain.

The Triumph Scrambler 400 X offers refined performance, solid build quality, and nimble handling abilities, all while being able to take on off-road trails and unexpected Indian road conditions. So overall, it is a jack of all trades and when you consider the Rs 2.67 lakh (ex-showroom) price tag, it does prove to be really good value for money. It is ideal for riders who want a bike that has stunning retro looks, handles everything from city commutes to weekend trails, and doesn’t feel underwhelming in any department.

The Scrambler 400 X is priced at Rs 2,67,207 (ex-showroom). For this price, you get a Triumph motorcycle with high levels of fit-and-finish and real-world versatility, making it a really attractive proposition.

The Scrambler 400X is available in a single variant priced at Rs 2.67 lakh (ex-showroom). The recently launched Scrambler 400 XC is listed as a different model, but it can be considered as a higher-spec version of the 400 X.

Triumph Scrambler 400X: Competition

The Triumph Scrambler 400 X goes up against the likes of the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, KTM 390 Adventure X, and the Yezdi Scrambler. The Himalayan 450 is more off-road focused, gets better tech features (TFT, maps), but is heavier and slightly more expensive. The Yezdi is less refined and not as powerful, but priced much cheaper. And finally, the KTM 390 Adventure X offers more performance and features, but it is priced higher and not as well finished as the Scrambler 400 X.
