Dealership sources have confirmed that the much-loved BS4 Yamaha YZF-R3 has been pulled off the shelf in India and won't be available for 2020. The BS4 version hadn’t received much change ever since its launch, aside from the addition of dual-channel ABS and Metzeler Sportec M5 radial tyres. While the bike was fantastic by itself, its high price of Rs 3,51,680 (ex-showroom) was a deal breaker for customers. Unfortunately, there’s no word on when the BS6 iteration will be launched in India.
What’s likely to replace the BS4 R3 is the international-spec model. However, the R3 sold in the European markets still needs to be updated to meet Euro-5 emission norms, which is equivalent to BS6 standards. Since European markets have an extension of a year, Yamaha could be looking at updating the bike by the end of 2020, which means we could be looking at a possible India launch somewhere around early-2021. What remains to be seen is whether the updates to the ECU and cat-con affect the engine’s performance. The discontinued model in India and the facelifted model sold abroad, for instance, make 42PS of power and 29.6Nm of peak torque from a 321cc parallel-twin liquid-cooled engine.
The Euro-spec Yamaha R3 comes with an updated design, a full-digital instrument cluster, revised ergonomics, and an upside-fork compared to the telescopic fork on the outgoing model. You can read about the differences in detail here.
What about its price? Well, considering most of the updates in the new-gen R3 are cosmetic, barring the cleaner engine and inverted forks, expect the supersport to cost around Rs 3.7 lakh to Rs 3.9 lakh (ex-showroom). It will continue to rival the likes of KTM RC 390, Kawasaki Ninja 300, and the Benelli 302R, if and when it hits the Indian market.

I just want people to know upfront that the 30+kmpl mileage is absolutely fantastic. In real life, R3 gives about 18-20kmpl in the city and 25kmpl on the highways. If you are buying an R3 with mileage in mind, when you're wired in ways, it may cause short circuits. I have owned one since Feb of 2020, probably the last one in India at the time, and can vouch for the excellence of the machine that it is. Especially in cruising. The ergonomics is so comfy. It’s mainly a tourer really, but can be just as good a daily go-to riding vehicle. Anyone who owns a showroom owned R3 can vouch that it’s the greatest sub 500cc bike in the Indian market, and by far at that when wholistic consideration is a thing.Read More
