Yamaha XSR155 Retro Motorcycle Launched in Thailand

Yamaha has launched its neo-retro XSR155 in Thailand. The new bike is the smallest in Yamaha’s global heritage line-up. Yamaha’s XSR lineup consists of neo-retro models based on road-going street bikes. For example, the Yamaha XSR900 is based on the MT-09 while the XSR is based on the MT-07. Similarly, the XSR155 is based on the MT-15. The bike is available in four variants: 80s Sport Heritage, Premium, Elegance and Wanderlust.

The XSR155 is priced at 91,500 baht (around Rs 2.1 lakh) in Thailand. However, both the MT-15 (98,500 baht) and R15 V3.0 (98,900 baht) are significantly more expensive than the XSR155 in Thailand. So if Yamaha were to launch the XSR155 in India, we could expect it to be more affordable than the MT-15. We expect it to retail at around Rs 1.40 lakh (ex-showroom).
The XSR155 gets a round LED headlamp and a round LED tail lamp. It has a teardrop-shaped fuel tank and a flat one-piece seat. The digital instrument console too is a circular shaped unit. At 134kg, the XSR155 is 1kg heavier than the MT-15. At 170mm, its ground clearance is 15mm higher than the MT-15. The seat height at 810mm is similar to the MT-15.
The XSR155 shares its 155cc liquid-cooled powerplant with the MT-15 and R15 V3.0. This unit makes 19.3PS and 14.7Nm and gets a 6-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch.
Given that it is based on the MT-15, the XSR155 gets the same deltabox frame and suspension setup as the Thai-spec MT-15. It also gets the same 17-inch alloy wheels but has a dual-purpose 110/70-17 and 140/70-17 tyre setup. Braking is via disc brakes at both ends. If it makes it way to India, expect the India-spec bike to come with a telescopic fork, box-type swingarm and single-channel ABS. So will Yamaha launch the XSR155 in India? We hope so and are keeping our fingers crossed that the retro-styled Yamaha makes its India debut at the 2020 Auto Expo.
