Odisha Scooter Rider Gets Rs 1,000 Challan For Not Wearing A Seat Belt

Turns out, he was given a challan meant for someone else

In a rather quirky incident that’s now surfaced online, a Honda Activa 125 rider in Odisha was slapped with a Rs 1000 challan for not wearing a seatbelt. What’s next? A fine of Rs 2,000 for not wearing a helmet in the car? Of course we’re joking. 

What really happened was that Abhisekh Kar, the rider, received an SMS, mentioning that a challan for some infraction involving his scooter had been issued. On examining the specifics, he discovered that the picture that was attached to the challan was actually of someone else. Kar approached officials of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways after the incident but still hasn't heard back from them.

Now, of course this was a rare incident and we can have a good laugh at it. But on a serious note, such software issues do need to be streamlined by the authorities as pointed out by Kar. He not only received a wrong challan, but he received it on February 17, even though the challan was issued on February 10. We hope that his voice is heard and he’s reimbursed for any fine that he had to pay for something he didn’t do.
