The Hero XPulse 200 4V is a lightweight motorcycle for adventures (the correct technical term is dual-purpose motorcycle). It’s capable of doing daily commutes with ease, as well as off-road or trail riding. Hero MotoCorp has designed it with a purpose-built chassis and a tractable engine, making it a strong entry point into adventure touring for many Indian riders. It costs Rs 1,44,727 for the standard version, and Rs 1,56,711 for the Pro variant (both ex-showroom Delhi). Here’s a closer look:

Rugged dual-purpose design

Hero has prioritised function over form in the XPulse 200 4V’s styling, with every element serving a purpose on and off the road. The motorcycle has a tall front stance, defined by a high-mounted mudguard and a compact visor. Its round LED projector headlamp looks simple, but effective. The bodywork is intentionally slim, allowing the rider to move freely and grip the tank with their knees when standing on the footpegs during trail riding.

• Metal bash plate is standard - useful to keep the underbody protected while going off-road.

Colours

The XPulse 200 4V is available in several colour options, with graphics that complement its rugged design. The standard variant is available in four colours, whereas the Pro variant is sold only in one exclusive colour scheme. The graphics on all colour schemes are sporty and attention-grabbing.

Engine And Performance

At the heart of the XPulse 200 4V is a 199.6cc, single-cylinder, air and oil-cooled engine. Its four-valve cylinder head is a key update over the older two-valve model, improving engine breathing for better performance. The motor produces 19.17PS and 17.35Nm, with oil cooling to help maintain consistent performance during long rides. The engine is paired with a 5-speed gearbox.

• Our experts say the engine’s strength lies in its strong low-end grunt - great for city commutes and quick overtakes in the city. 

• However, the upper half of the rev band doesn’t offer a lot of performance. While it’s comfortable at 75-80kmph, anything more will result in the engine feeling strained. 

• Our experts got almost 35kmpl with spirited riding, so expect around 40kmpl under normal riding conditions.

Features

The XPulse 200 4V prioritises practical features for adventure riding over complex electronics. The main highlight is its Bluetooth-enabled fully digital LCD instrument console, which offers smartphone connectivity for turn-by-turn navigation and call notifications. The motorcycle is also equipped with full LED lighting, including a bright projector headlamp that improves visibility for night rides on highways and trails. It also gets a single-channel ABS with multiple modes, and a USB charging port.

• 3 ABS modes are Road, Off-road & Rally. Road: maximum ABS intervention up front. Off-road: minimal ABS intervention so that you can control the bike better on loose surfaces. Rally: completely deactivates the front ABS 

• The prompts for the turn-by-turn navigation could be more legible. 

Underpinnings And Other Specifications

The hardware is one of the XPulse 200 4V's strongest attributes. The suspension setup consists of a long-travel telescopic fork and a long-travel rear monoshock. Brakes include 276mm front and 220mm rear disc with single-channel ABS. The 21-inch front and the 18-inch rear spoke wheels are wrapped with block pattern tyres. 

Details:

• Our experts say the suspension is well-tuned for commutes as well as off-roading.

• Longer travel suspension on the Pro variant feels a little vague on highways - not ideal for smooth roads but more for hardcore trails.

• Brakes are adequately powerful for its intended use.

Overall, the Hero Xpulse 200 4V is a great option (especially the base variant) for those who want to learn the basics of off-road riding, and also for those who want an inexpensive motorcycle that can tackle really bad roads effortlessly. The Pro is good for those who are a bit more serious about off-roading. That said, this is not something that you’d want to consider if you’re travelling long distances on the highway before hitting the trail.
