The KTM 160 Duke has been launched in India at a price of Rs 1,84,998 (ex-showroom), and the bike is meant to be the successor to the Duke 125, which was discontinued a few months ago. The bike shares some design similarities with the KTM Duke 200, but with some underpinnings borrowed from the KTM RC 200. The bike will primarily compete against the Yamaha MT-15 in India.
The 160 Duke now gets a similar design as the KTM 200 Duke, which takes inspiration from higher capacity models like the KTM 790 Duke. The bike is now powered by a 164.2cc, liquid-cooled engine which produces 19PS at 9,500rpm and 15.5Nm at 7,500rpm. This is a bump of 0.6PS and 1.4Nm compared to the Yamaha MT-15.
The bike is suspended on a WP Apex inverted fork at the front with 138mm travel, and a WP Apex monoshock with 161mm wheel travel. The bike rolls on 17-inch alloy wheels, similar to the light weight ones that are offered on the KTM RC200. It also gets the same brake rotors with a 320mm front and 230mm rear disc, with radial callipers. These alloys are lighter than the ones on the Duke 200, and should hence help in the overall handling. The bike has a seat height of 815mm, which in our opinion, is a bit tall. Thankfully, the ground clearance is pretty ample at 174mm. The kerb weight is 147kg, which is around 6kg heavier than the Yamaha MT-15. The bike has a tank capacity of 10.1-litres, more or less the same as the MT 15.
The Duke 160 gets a 5-inch LCD console, with features such as smartphone connectivity for turn-by-turn navigation, call/SMS alerts and music controls. Other than this, the bike is also offered with switchable ABS at the rear.
With the Duke 160, KTM India is trying to offer an alternative to the popular Yamaha MT-15 and a more affordable entry point into the KTM family. Currently, the MT-15 stands out as the only model in the 150 to 160cc, liquid-cooled streetfighter segment.
Yamaha has been achieving healthy sales figures for the MT-15, with around 7,000 units sold every month in the last three months. These numbers are not small by any means, and it seems like KTM has realised how lucrative this space is. At Rs 4,498 over the MT-15, the cheapest KTM Duke also offers good value for money.
That said, if you’re solely looking at the pricing, for just Rs 7,330 more, you’ll be able to buy the Bajaj Pulsar NS400Z, which offers over twice the power of the 160 Duke! But things aren’t as straightforward as it seems considering the fact that the Pulsar NS400Z may not offer as good a mileage as the 160 Duke. So for those who want a good balance of mileage and performance, in addition to premium brand value, the 160 Duke makes good sense.
Earlier, with the Duke 125, the brand was not able to offer a product that was capable enough to take on the Yamaha MT-15. The 125 Duke felt a bit too underpowered and most riders outgrew the bike within a short span of time. The lack of the excitement factor was the main problem, leading to poor sales. With the Duke 160, this should not be an issue as the bike looks way better on paper compared to the Duke 125 that it replaces.

Because I needed something lightweight to weave traffic safely. My old bike felt bulky, slow in response. Ducati style bikes were too expensive. The KTM 160 Duke seemed just right: light frame, strong brakes, quick steering. I saw myself riding to work, weekends and this seemed like the one that could handle all that. My experience has been exciting. It is small enough to feel nimble but powerful enough to feel alive. I enjoy cornering it pivots nicely. City rides are fun because I can dart through gaps. Over bumps there is some harshness but manageable. I am more confident now traffic is less stress. Yes I had recommend it to riders who want agility.
