After teasing the launch, Kawasaki has now announced the launch date of the Ninja 400. The bike is all set to come to India on 24th of June 2022, which is a lot earlier than we speculated. We’re not complaining though.
That would mark the return of the supersport after being discontinued back in December 2019 because the earlier bike didn’t meet the strict BS6 emission norms.
The international-spec Ninja 400 got updated recently and it makes 45.4PS and 37Nm from its 399cc parallel-twin, liquid-cooled engine. While the power figures are the same, the bike now produces 1Nm less than its BS4 version. That said, it still makes 1.9PS more than its closest rival, the KTM RC 390. They both have identical torque figures. Kawasaki also updated the bike’s slip-and-assist clutch that the company claims has 20 percent lighter lever action than before.

Other underpinnings on the international-spec Ninja 400 include a 41mm telescopic fork along with a preload-adjustable monoshock, both of which are unchanged from the previous version. A 310mm front disc and a 220mm one at the rear handle braking duties, both smaller than the RC 390’s 320mm and 230mm setup at the front and rear respectively. To back the bike’s sporty credentials, it comes with 17-inchers at both ends with a 110-section tyre at the front and 150-section tyre at the rear. Tipping the scales at 168kg (same as before), it is one of the lightest bikes in its segment.
We expect the Ninja 400 in its latest iteration to be priced around Rs 5.25 lakh (ex-showroom), a Rs 26k premium over the BS4 iteration. That said, we hope Kawasaki proves us wrong there too, as a competitive price could be the icing on the cake for an already feature-loaded and fun-to-ride supersport.
The Ninja 400’s chief rival will be the KTM RC 390. Other less powerful, smaller-capacity alternatives include the TVS Apache RR 310 and the upcoming BMW G 310 RR.
