Ather 450 Apex: Same Price, Other Options

Not really a fan of the Ather 450 Apex? There are some really good alternatives in the same price bracket

The Ather 450 Apex is by far one of the best performance electric scooters in India. It’s loaded with features, and even has a translucent rear panel that lets you show off the painted frame in style. That said, if you’re looking for something else at the same price bracket as the Apex, you’re in luck as there are quite a few interesting alternatives out there. Here are the top 5:

Simple Ultra

Price: 2,34,999 (ex-showroom)

The Simple Ultra is one of the very few electric scooters that offers similar levels of performance as the Ather 450 Apex. It even has a similar angular design as the Apex, but looks distinct enough, especially in the bright orange colour. The biggest highlight is its claimed range (Indian Driving Conditions - IDC) of 400km from its 6.5kWh battery pack. This makes it one of the electric scooters with the longest range in India. What’s more, it has a 15kmph higher claimed top speed than the Apex, at 115kmph, and can accelerate from 0-40kmph in 2.77 seconds (0.13 seconds quicker than the Apex).

If you’re looking for a sporty electric scooter that looks a bit different from Ather electric scooters, this is a good choice. That said, Simple does not have as widespread a network as Ather does.

Royal Enfield Bullet 350

Price: Rs 2,08,012 (ex-showroom Chennai)

There’s nothing more iconic than the Royal Enfield Bullet 350. More importantly, for around the same price as the Ather 450 Apex, you can get the Black Gold colour variant of the Bullet. This particular colour variant gets tasteful gold 3D logos and hand-painted pinstripes on the tank, along with a blacked-out powertrain.

The Bullet 350 may not be as performance packed as the Ather nor as feature packed. What it offers is a relaxed, characterful riding experience that lets you enjoy the journey in a laid back manner. It’s upright riding posture is great for city commutes and highway runs. This motorcycle is ideal if you want a charming, properly retro roadster.

Yamaha R15 M

Price: Rs 1,96,100 (ex-showroom Delhi)

The Yamaha R15 is one of the best affordable performance bikes in India, and for the Apex’s price budget, you can get the top-end M variant in the Icon Performance colour scheme. The M variant packs a more advanced TFT screen with turn-by-turn navigation, and a quickshifter (upshifts only).

It handles corners like a hot knife on butter, has enough performance for the highways, but the only aspect that you need to keep in mind is the aggressive riding posture. If you’re fine with it, there’s nothing better than the R15 when it comes to a potent motorcycle that lets you learn and improve your riding skills.

KTM 200 Duke

Price: Rs 2,00,033 (ex-showroom Delhi)

Find the R15 a bit too aggressive? Well, you can consider the KTM 200 Duke for around the same price as the Ather 450 Apex. The raw firepower from the 199cc liquid-cooled engine makes it a fun to ride streetfighter. There are no fancy electronics, and the rev-happy engine urges you to push further. It’s also got premium underpinnings, dual-channel ABS in case things get a little hairy.

All in all, if you want a performance-packed naked bike on a budget, the KTM 200 Duke is a worthy motorcycle to consider. Just note that even though it can handle triple-digit speeds on the highway, the lack of wind protection makes it a little uncomfortable for long highway rides.

Royal Enfield Meteor 350

Price: Rs 2,06,979- 2,09,901 (ex-showroom, Chennai)

If swanky cruisers are your thing, then the Royal Enfield Meteor 350 is one of the most well-rounded options that you can consider if you have a budget equivalent to the Apex’s price. You can either opt for the Stellar variant or the Aurora variant. The former comes with alloy wheels with tubeless tyres, and a cushioned backrest (no windshield) whereas the latter gets a windshield, cushioned backrest but spoke wheels with tubed tyres. That said, the Aurora variant gets really fancy dual-tone retro colour schemes whereas the Stellar makes do with simpler single-tone colour options.

The new-gen 349cc air-cooled, counterbalanced engine is refined, and allows you to cruise at around 90kmph easily. If you’re the kind of person who likes to lazily cruise on smooth highways for hours on end, then the Meteor 350 is a great bike to consider.

Way Better Than I Expected!

Honestly, it was the Warp mode and the sheer acceleration. I wanted the quickest scooter on the road. The 'regenerative braking was very good in traffic areas. The transparent panels look sharp, too.. Overall its worth these performance is very impressive as it claims. Hitting 80-100 km/h is instant and effortless. On the highway, it holds its speed well, but you definitely have to stick to Eco/Ride mode to get a usable range. The Magic Twist feature is a game changer for stop-and-go traffic. Yes, I would recommend it, but only for the right person. Buy it if you love performance, want a premium, feature packed experience, and mostly use it for city or short distance highway travel. Don't buy it if range anxiety is a major concern, or if you are on a tight budget it's expensive and some features are behind a subscription. Read More
