Here’s us taking a closer look at one of the most expensive bikes on sale in India

The crème de la crème of luxury tourers, the 2021 Honda Gold Wing, graced Indian shores yesterday at a price tag of Rs 37.20 lakh! That’s Rs 10 lakh+ more expensive than its predecessor. So what makes the bike worth all that moolah? A closer look at the 2021 Gold Wing may give us an answer:

The Honda Gold Wing went under the knife in 2018 and came out all chiselled and thoroughly modern-looking. Though the form hasn’t changed much, it flaunts a sharper design now. But like every other Gold Wing before, it continues to be a hefty machine-- 385kg for the manual transmission variant and 390 kg for the Airbag+DCT variant.

Anyone would be intimidated by the sight of the Gold Wing’s headlight in their rear view mirror. The 2021 model features LED illumination all around, complete with DRL. And if the sinister-looking headlight isn’t enough, the bike even comes with a pair of fog lamps as standard. Honda has even equipped it with self-cancelling indicators.

The flagship tourer comes with an electric windscreen. In fact, it boasts of an adjustability range of 125mm and even changes angle as per the height. Not only that, the 2021 Honda Gold Wing stores the last setting so that you don’t have to bother adjusting it every time.

The 7-inch TFT console looks straight out of a car. Be it the gyrocompass for seamless navigation or Apple CarPlay and Android Auto-compatibility, this is one of the most sophisticated dashboards seen on a motorcycle.

The Honda Gold Wing was the first bike to feature an airbag. BigWing India brought the top-of-the-line DCT+Airbag variant.

Honda has left no stone unturned in this department. The Gold Wing features ride-by-wire tech, traction control, hill start assist, ABS, four riding modes, and tyre pressure monitoring. Oh, there’s also an Airbag-equipped variant on offer (only with DCT).

The Gold Wing doesn’t disappoint in this department as well. It features electronically lockable panniers, and the new top box is big enough to gobble up two full-face XXL helmets, even with the intercom connected.

Honda has updated the pillion backrest for the 2021 model and it is now claimed to be even more comfortable. Honda has changed the backrest angle from 16 degrees to 23 degrees and even increased its height.

The 2021 Honda Gold Wing continues to use the 1,833cc flat-six engine (paired with either a DCT or manual transmission), putting out 126PS at 5,500rpm and 170 Nm at 4,500rpm.

Honda has provided the Gold Wing with a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Both variants feature a reverse gear as well.

Dropping the anchor on this 385kg behemoth are twin 320mm disc brakes paired with 6-pot floating calipers, with sintered brake pads. At the rear, a three-pot caliper clamped onto a 316mm disc does the job.

The 2021 Gold Wing continues with a double wishbone front suspension and a link-type rear monoshock attached to the single-sided swingarm. The suspension system features electronic preload adjustability in four settings, depending on the payload.
