This off-road themed scooter is the perfect rival to the Aprilia Storm 125. Will it come to India?

  • The 2020 iteration comes in a new grey colour.
  • There have been no changes mechanically.
  • Priced at 305,000 Yen (around Rs 2.16 lakh), ex-showroom.

Yamaha Japan has launched the 2020 Yamaha BW’S125 in the country at 305,000 Yen, which is around Rs 2.16 lakh, ex-showroom. For 2020, this off-road themed scooter comes in a new grey colour option in addition to the already-existing yellow. There have been no other mechanical changes over the 2019 iteration.

The 2020 Yamaha BW’S125 is powered by a 124cc single-cylinder air-cooled fuel-injected motor, which churns out 9.8PS at 7500rpm and 9.9Nm at 6000rpm. The scooter comes with a claimed mileage of 37.3kmpl. The output figures are quite close to its Indian rival, the Aprilia Storm 125, which makes 9.9PS at 7700rpm and 9.7Nm at 6000rpm.

The sleek bodywork and exposed handlebar with knuckle guards go really well with the scooter’s overall rugged stance. It also gets a tail rack at the rear and an upswept exhaust. Rounding off the off-road themed look are 12-inch alloy wheels wrapped with 120-section front and 130-section rear tubeless block pattern tyres. Suspension bits include a telescopic front fork and dual rear shock absorbers. The scooter comes to a halt using disc brakes on both ends.

As far as the feature list is concerned, it gets a proper full-digital instrument cluster, a generous 29-litre underseat storage, and an apron-mounted cubby hole that’s large enough to hold a 500ml bottle. For added convenience, the fuel tank cap is mounted on the apron too.

Yamaha is unlikely to launch the scooter in India, but we might get something better as the Japanese brand intends to launch the Yamaha R15 V3-based NMax 155 sporty scooter in the near future. Expect that to happen only after the coronavirus pandemic situation dials down and the market begins to stabilise.
