Royal Enfield Himalayan Highlights

Royal Enfield has launched the Himalayan with dual channel ABS for Rs 1.78 lakh, which makes it Rs 10,000 dearer to the standard model. The Sleet edition, is a camouflage painted variant, is priced at Rs 1.80 lakh. Apart from the this addition, the Himalayan has remain unchanged. As far as color options are considered, you can choose between Snow White, Granite Black colour for the standard variant.

The Himalayan is powered by a 411cc, single-cylinder, 4-stroke, air-cooled, SOHC, fuel-injected engine, which churns a maximum power of 24.83PS @ 6500 rpm and a maximum torque of 32.00Nm @ 4250 rpm, mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Royal Enfield claims that the bike can clock a top speed of 120kmph and return a mileage of 36.26kmpl. The total fuel tank capacity of the bike is 15 litres. The Himalayan is fitted with 21-inch front and 18-inch rear tube radial tyres. Braking is handled by 300mm front disc brake and 240mm rear disc brake. The suspension setup consists of telescopic 200mm travel at the front and monoshock 180mm wheel travel at the rear.

The Himalayan poses competition to the Bajaj Dominar 400, the Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350, and the Mahindra Mojo.

Royal Enfield Himalayan Expert Review

Overview

The Royal Enfield Himalayan is easily the most worthy and proper entry level adventure tourer that you can buy under Rs 2 lakh in India. The motorcycle presents a different approach by Royal Enfield and shows how the company fearlessly entered a segment that was completely new for it. The motorcycle looks like any other adventure bike but the rawness and ruggedness in design is what makes the Himalayan different from the rest. The bike gets a rounded headlamp upfront along with a tall windscreen. The raised up front fender along with the conventional one shouts out loud the dual purpose nature of this bike.

 

There is place for luggage panniers and the instrument cluster of this bike comes highly informative, housing a geographical compass as well. The 21-inch wheel up front along with a 17-inch unit at the rear come paired with dual purpose tyres so that the motorcycle can take on any surface without much difficulty.

 

The Royal Enfield Himalayan gets its power from a 411cc engine assisted to a five-speed transmission. The fuel injected motor is good for churning out respective power and torque figures of 24.5 PS and 32 Nm. The braking to the bike is done with the help of a 300mm disc up front that couples with a 240mm disc brake at the rear. The bike has a minimum ground clearance of 220mm and has a wheelbase of 1465mm. The Himalayan has been fitted with a 15-litre fuel tank and accounts for a total kerb weight of 191 kgs. The overall body dimensions of this adventure tourer stand at 2190mm x 840mm x 1360mm (LxWxH).

 

The Himalayan is currently priced at Rs 1.84 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The bike currently has no direct competition in particular but will have rivals in future in the form of upcoming BMW G 310 GS and KTM 390 Adventure. The bike is available for sale in two colour options namely Snow and Granite.

Design and Features

The Royal Enfield Himalayan looks more of a raw adventure tourer and its design is indeed a no-nonsense one. The front is highlighted by a rounded headlamp along with a tall windscreen to protect the rider from windblasts at high speeds and mud splashes during off-roading. The motorcycle gets luggage panniers and has also a provision to fit petrol cans in case of long distance journeys. The large 21 inch wired wheel upfront has been fitted to take on the uneven surfaces with ease and offer a comfortable ride quality. 

 

 

The bike has been fitted with split step up seats that come well padded and offer optimum comfort to the rider and pillion. In terms of features, the Himalayan has been integrated with a highly informative cockpit that comes with a useful geographical compass as well. Furthermore, the motorcycle receives an LED tail lamp as well. 

Engine and Performance

The Himalayan houses a 410cc, single-cylinder, air and oil-cooled motor mated to a five-speed transmission. The fuel-injected engine makes 24.8PS @ 6500rpm and 32Nm of torque @ 4250rpm. When launched, the Himalayan came with a carburettor but now it gets fuel-injection to clear the BS-IV emissions norms.

This is the first modern Royal Enfield motor to do away with push rods instead using a chain-driven overhead camshaft. The engine is called LS410 where LS stands for long-stroke. The long stroke nature allows the motor to develop its peak torque and horsepower at low rpm which is quite useful in off-road riding conditions.

According to Royal Enfield, power has deliberately been kept low on the motorcycle so as to make its performance more accessible to newer riders graduating from smaller bikes. The new engine uses a counterbalancer to smoothen out vibrations. Interestingly, the top-end of the engine is air-cooled while the bottom end of the engine i.e. the crankcase uses oil cooling.

The Himalayan feels unlike any other Royal Enfield bikes, it is more refined though not as refined as say, an equivalent Japanese bike. The bike features tall gearing which makes it relaxed during highway runs. According to our tests, the carburetted Himalayan could do the 0-100kmph run in 12.27 seconds and achieve a true top speed of 122kmph.

Braking and Handling

The Royal Enfield Himalayan is bolted on a half duplex split cradle frame and comes equipped with 41mm conventional telescopic forks upfront along with a monoshock for the rear. The stopping power to this motorcycle is delivered with the help of 300mm disc brake upfront that pairs with a 240mm disc at the rear. ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) is not being offered even as an option.

Safety and Features

The Royal Enfield Himalayan comes with a powerful 12V H4 60/55 W headlamp that offers good illumination at nights. Furthermore, the unit is enabled with Automatic Headlamp ON (AHO) feature that means it stays always ON, no matter it is day or night. This is done in order to improve the visibility of the vehicle and hence, avoid chances of being hit by another. The bike comes equipped with a 300mm disc brake upfront along with a 240mm disc unit at the rear that indeed offers a decent stopping power and stops the bike as and when required.
