The test mules look pretty much production-ready

  • Going by the image of the test mules, it is likely to get a dual-suspension setup at the rear.
  • Likely to offer performance equivalent to a 110cc petrol-powered scooter.
  • Expect Suzuki to launch the electric scooter in mid-2021.

Back in November 2019, it was reported that Suzuki had made a prototype and would start testing its electric scooter in the following year. Exactly a year later, the Japanese brand’s electric scooter has been spotted testing for the first time. It is based on none other than the tried-and-tested Suzuki Burgman Street’s platform.

Going by the spy shot image, the Suzuki Burgman Electric comes with a neat-looking blue highlight on the side panels, emphasising its eco-friendly nature. Also, while the petrol-powered Burgman Street gets a single shock absorber mounted on the left side, this one appears to have one on the right side, hinting at the possibility of a dual shock absorber setup. It gets a swingarm cover in place of the exhaust and a rear tyre hugger, instead of a conventional fender. It also features a shorter licence plate holder to go with the tyre hugger, making it look slightly sportier than the petrol-powered version.

The Suzuki Burgman Electric is likely to be powered by a frame-mounted electric motor linked to a belt drive. Its performance could be equivalent to that of a 110cc conventional petrol-powered scooter. Expect a range of around 90km on a single charge. We could see either a fast-charging system or a swappable battery setup in the upcoming scooter, and that should ensure there’s no range anxiety. Up front, it gets the same telescopic fork and 12-inch alloy wheel with disc brake as its fossil-fuel-burning sibling.

Other features such as the all-LED headlamp and tail lamp as well as fully digital instrument cluster with smartphone connectivity are likely to be carried over. Expect Suzuki to price the scooter at around Rs 1.20 lakh (ex-showroom), putting it squarely against the Bajaj Chetak electric, Ather 450 Plus and TVS iQube Electric in the premium electric scooter segment. Considering how production-ready the test mules look, Suzuki could launch the electric scooter by mid-2021.
