The launch of the Royal Enfield Hunter 350 was a highly anticipated event, and it did not disappoint. The roadster now serves as the cheapest ‘J’ platform Royal Enfield motorcycle money can buy, but Eicher Motors MD Siddhartha Lal did not stop there and has shared plans for an electric offering that’s expected by 2026.

Yes, you read that right. An electric Royal Enfield is in the works. The classic bikemaker has expressed a desire to try its hand at EVs, an unavoidable space for OEMs today.
That said, RE has made it clear that it is in no rush to release an electric offering at the cost of quality, performance and brand experience. Recognising the importance of the space, its current challenges and areas of improvement, RE states that while it has multiple EV projects currently in the works, the first one will likely be an urban motorcycle built on a whole new platform.
The first motorcycle will likely feature performance comparable to a laidback 250-300cc motorcycle in order to extract reasonable range from the battery pack. More performance and long range demand more batteries, and more batteries mean more weight. Moreover, with the current level of technology, packaging the cells will be a challenge.
Hence, an urban-centric electric motorcycle would make a lot of sense; because with the current battery technology, the range for intra-city usage should be fairly easy to achieve at a reasonable price point. Therefore an ascending approach will be most favorable for the brand. RE is hoping the EV technology gets better and cheaper, in turn helping the cause.
