Riding Through Rann: Journey To The Soul Of Kutch

Truly a once in a lifetime moment, something to never forget and remember always
My work as an automotive journalist is very fulfilling, but sometimes even your own passion starts to weigh you down. The only cure? The open road and the freedom that two-wheels give me. So, when TVS invited me to experience the Rann Utsav, I knew it would be the perfect escape — an opportunity to rediscover the joy of riding, soaking in Gujarat’s rich cultural heritage by visiting Rann of Kutch — not only India’s largest district but more importantly, also one of the most breathtaking landscapes in India. In fact, even the pictures cannot do justice to the vastness of this marshland, which is amongst the largest salt deserts. Riding in the white Rann of Kutch was nothing short of a dream coming true. It was truly a bucket list ride experience: surreal, fun, and above all, unforgettable.
From Pune to Kutch: The Journey Begins
While I was expecting a lot of adventure at white Rann of Kutch, it started with an early morning flight from Pune to Ahmedabad, and then another flight to Bhuj. Additionally, Bhuj to Kutch, albeit a quick and comfortable, was an hour long drive on the road in the taxi, which built up my anticipation for what lay ahead. The entire journey took me almost nine hours from start to finish. The moment I landed, the vast open landscapes and dry desert air instantly signaled that I was far from the chaos of city life. And what was coming ahead for our short but all-day packed trip was much more exciting. TVS had planned an exciting itinerary ahead of us.
TVS Unveils Two Special Ronins at Rann Utsav
TVS had a surprise in store for us. On 13 February, at the heart of the Rann Utsav, it unveiled two special edition Ronins — which pay tribute to Gujarat’s culture richness. These motorcycles feature custom designs inspired by the region’s traditional Ajrak print art, with intricate patterns and illustrations showcasing the beauty of the Kutch landscape, and the attention to detail is quite striking.
Along with these motorcycles, the Rann of Kutch Edition Ronin was also showcased, which had made its debut at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. After the unveiling, the late evening displayed traditional Kutchi folk dance forms and a soulful session of songs, further immersing us in the region’s rich cultural heritage.
Road To Heaven
The next day was Valentine's day, and it began in the best way possible — an early morning ride, and I was lucky enough to get on one of those two special edition Rann Utsav Ronins, through the stunning ‘Road to Heaven.’ There is no better way to celebrate a love for riding than cruising through one of the most picturesque roads in India. With every passing minute, the scenery became more dramatic and alluring — arid landscapes, patches of thorny bushes, and small villages where life moved at an unhurried pace. The experience was both thrilling and calming, a true ride of freedom.
Then came the real highlight: the vast, salt-crusted expanse of the White Rann, stretching endlessly under the morning sun. I stopped for a moment, turned off the engine, and experienced the eerie silence. No honking, no city noise, just the whispering desert wind. It was one of those rare moments where you truly disconnect from everything else and feel utterly present.
Things to Keep in Mind While Riding in Kutch
Riding in Kutch comes with its own set of challenges. Given that you are riding or travelling on the ‘Road To Heaven’, which is close to the India-Pakistan border, you must stop only at designated viewpoints by the Indian Army. Before the ride started, all riders were asked to give way to trucks for safety reasons. Plus, the road is single-lane, so it is essential to stay alert and keep your eyes ahead at all times to avoid any unexpected hazards. Meanwhile, the scorching heat of Kutch can tire and dehydrate you out very easily, hence carrying ample water and staying constantly hydrated is key. It is important to be mindful of your surroundings and take regular breaks to ensure you are in top form for the ride.
Parting Thoughts
This was my first time going to the Rann of Kutch and also riding on the Road to Heaven. All in all, it would not be an exaggeration to say that it was the most memorable moment of the entire trip, offering peace and serenity. And as the sun set over the vast, white expanse, I knew one thing for sure – this was something I would never forget. It was surreal in every sense, I could not help but smile at the joy that this experience brought.
