Honda Shine 100: Variants Explained

The Honda Shine 100 is a simple, no-fuss commuter bike built around a few core aspects that are important for budget commuter bike buyers: mileage, ease of handling, and affordability. Honda sells it in two versions, Standard and DX. The engine and most of the hardware stay the same across both, but the DX does add a few upgrades worth knowing about before you buy.

What’s Different

The dash is the first thing you'll notice switching from one to the other. The Standard sticks with an analogue readout, while the DX moves to a full digital display. While the analogue console only gets a speedometer, fuel gauge and an odometer, the LCD console has a few more useful bits including a clock, tripmeter, and more importantly, a range indicator. That’ll come in handy especially when you’re running on fumes. 

Also, the 5-step preload adjustability on the DX helps in tweaking the rear suspension based on the load or the terrain for the best handling. More importantly, the DX variant gets alloy wheels that are missing on the standard model, even though both use alloy wheels. Honda should’ve made this a standard feature if you ask us. Tubeless tyres can handle punctures much better than tubed ones, as the latter tends to lose air much more quickly. Also, the DX variant gets fancier-looking graphics and a colour scheme, along with a slightly redesigned fuel tank. But note that the capacity is the same at xx litres.

What Doesn't Change

Both versions run the same 98.98cc, air-cooled motor that’s tuned for mileage. It’s not the peppiest of the lot, but it’s got good grunt; shifting is easy, so city commutes are effortless. Don’t expect much in terms of highway performance, as it feels a bit stressed beyond 65- 70 km/h. That said, at 99kg, it’s one of the lightest in the segment, so it’s very easy to handle - be it at the parking lot or while snaking through traffic. 

The diamond frame, seat length, and the side-stand engine cutoff, which stops the bike from starting if the stand's still down, are shared across both variants too. 

Which One Should You Pick

The gap between the two comes down to the dash, the suspension, and the tyres; everything else is identical. That upgrade costs about Rs 6,700 more for the DX, which, in our opinion, is worth it. Honda should’ve also given a front disc in the DX variant as it would’ve made the braking much safer.

If you’re on a very strict budget, then the base variant will do just fine, but you might want to swap the tyres for a tubeless set when the stock tyre wears out.
