Yamaha has unveiled the 2026 NMax 155 in Europe, and it comes with a crucial update to make life easier on traffic-riddled roads. The Maxi scooter now gets a new transmission system called ‘Yamaha Electric Continuously Variable Transmission (YECVT)’. This system works quite differently compared to your regular automatic gearbox, giving the scooter almost a bike-like character. Here’s how:

This new transmission’s party trick is allowing riders to downshift, giving the Yamaha NMax 155 a motorcycle-like character. How do you do it? Very simple - Riders can press a downshift button on the left-hand side switch gear, which changes modes and instantly provides better acceleration as well as stronger engine braking. There are two modes: Sport and Town. The Sport mode keeps things more responsive whereas the Town mode is ideal for relaxed commuting. Alternatively, the system will also work when the riders get on the throttle aggressively if you want a quick burst of torque.
The scooter also features a 4.2-inch TFT console which comes with a full-fledged Garmin navigation system offered free of charge. However, the brand has stated that this feature might not be available in all countries. We think a smartphone screen mirroring functionality would’ve been more practical. That said, the console looks quite nice and also quite upmarket. There’s also a small LCD screen to show the speed, fuel level and odometer readings. Other features include music controls, call/SMS alerts and the option to accept/reject calls.

Apart from the updated transmission, the rest of the scooter remains unchanged. It is still powered by the same 155cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine which produces 15.1PS and 14Nm.
The brand had already showcased the NMax 155 at Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, and it was hinted that the scooter could come to India by the end of 2025. The brand had sent us an Block-Your-Date invite for November 11, 2025 for some potential launches, but our guess is that it won’t be the Nmax 155.
That’s because the much awaited Yamaha XSR 155 was recently spotted testing in India, and the launch event could be for that neo-retro bike. Another possibility could be the unveiling of the Yamaha WR155 R dual-sport bike, whose spy shots are also doing the rounds recently.
