TVS Apache RTR 160 4V Old Vs New - Differences In Pics

TVS recently launched a new variant of the Apache RTR 160 4V in India at a price of Rs 1.47 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). This new top-end variant, called ‘TFT’ as per the official website, gets a new fascia and loads of additional features over the one with dual-channel ABS and inverted fork - which was the top-end variant before the new version was launched. Here are the key differences in images. 

Design 

In the new TFT variant, TVS has given a more aggressive looking frontend with a new LED projector headlight and DRLs. On the other hand, the older top-end variant gets the sleek, insect-themed LED headlight. It may not be a powerful projector like the new TFT variant, but we personally like this one as it gives the bike its own distinct identity. On the other hand, the projector headlight design in the new variant looks somewhat similar to the Bajaj Pulsar N160. 

That said, the rest of the design elements of the bike - the muscular fuel tank, sleek side panels, and the tail section with the stubby dual-exit exhaust - all look the same on both bikes. Of course, the colours are also different as the TFT variant is available in three new striking colour options: Marine Blue, Racing Red and Matte Black all of which suit the motorcycles over new look quite well. On the other hand, the older top-end version comes in Granite Grey, Pearl White, and Glossy Black.

Engine

The TFT variant of the Apache RTR 160 4V uses the same engine as before, which is an OBD-2B, E20 fuel-compatible 159.7cc single-cylinder, air & oil-cooled engine making the same 17.55PS at 9,250rpm and 14.75Nm at 7,500rpm. It gets a 5-speed gearbox. The biggest difference here is that the TFT variant exclusively gets a slip-and assist clutch. This should ensure better stability while downshifting aggressively, and the assist function should make sure the lever action is easier. Not that the 160’s clutch levers were heavy, but still a good feature to have nonetheless. 

Underpinnings 

Both old and new variants of the RTR 160 4V use the same single-piece handlebar, split-cradle frame with a golden coloured inverted fork setup and preload adjustable monoshock. The gold finish on the inverted fork really enhances the premium appeal of the bike, and serves as a neat contrast to the all-black underpinnings. 

The braking setup is also the same with a 270mm front and a 240mm rear petal discs along with dual channel ABS. It runs on 17-inch alloy wheels with a 90-section front and a 130-section rear tyre.

Features 

The new variant Apache RTR 160 4V comes with a 5-inch TFT instrument cluster. However the information is mostly the same as the older variant’s LCD console. Both consoles come with the brand's SmartXconnect feature and supports smartphone connectivity with turn-by-turn navigation, SMS/call alerts, and crash alert. However the new variant also gets voice assist. Both consoles support race telemetry like a 0 to 60kmph recorder and top-speed recorder. Visually speaking, the TFT console looks pretty cool, but the LCD display isn’t too bad either, at least as far as usability is concerned.

Along with the new LED projector headlight, the TFT variant also gets the LED indicators similar to the RTR 310 - and we love it!. Both variants also continue with the 3 ride modes: Rain, Urban and Sport. In Rain and Urban mode the motorcycle makes slightly less power and torque at 15.64PS and 14.41Nm. The riding modes not only adjust the power but also tune the ABS intervention levels accordingly. This is very handy for riders who are inexperienced or when riding on slippery, wet roads.

Price And Verdict 

The TFT variant RTR 160 4V costs Rs 8,000 more than the previous top-end variant with dual channel ABS and inverted fork. The premium is fair considering that the TFT variant gets lots of new features like a new projector headlight, slip and assist clutch, a TFT console and revised colour schemes.

The RTR 160 4V has always been a very sporty and fun-to-ride motorcycle in the 160cc segment. If you’re an Apache fan who’s keen on getting the latest-and-greatest, then the top-end TFT variant makes sense. Those who are looking to save up a bit can go for the variant with the dual-channel ABS with inverted fork and it’s not too far off in terms of overall features either. Do note that the prices of both of these variants will go down even further from September 22, and here’s why.
