The Classic 500 Pegasus was launched in the UK on May 22nd. The motorcycle’s production is limited to only 1,000 units globally, of which 190 units are allotted for the UK. For the Indian market Royal Enfield has set apart 250 units. The Classic 500 Pegasus is available in two colours: Service Brown and Olive Drab Green in the international market. But here, the Pegasus will be available only in Service Brown, as the Green colour variant is not legal in the country, owing to military protocols.
During World War II, Royal Enfield’s versatile motorcycle, the Flying Flea, was airdropped at the frontlines of numerous crucial battles. Its light wet weight of just 59kg allowed it to be carried over harsh terrains, thus making the motorcycle a highly mobile means of transport for the troops. The Classic 500 Pegasus is conceived as a tribute to this legendary motorcycle. It gets a maroon and blue Pegasus emblem on the fuel tank. The emblem is the official Parachute Regiment insignia, and the fuel tank also sports an individual stencilled serial number to complete the military look. Additionally, there’s a ‘Made Like A Gun’ decal on the battery box, brown handlebar grips, and a leather strap with brass buckles across the air filter. The engine, exhaust, rims, pedals, headlight nacelles are all blacked out, and the engine casings are colour-coded with the bike’s colour on the bodywork and frame.
The mechanical underpinnings are the same as the regular variant of the Classic 500. That means, you get the same 499cc single-cylinder engine that’s good for 27.5PS at 5250rpm. The peak torque of 41.3Nm arrives at 4000rpm. Power is sent to the wheel via a 5-speed transmission linked to a chain drive. In the UK market, the limited edition retro motorcycle costs GBP 4,999, on road. Expect the India-bound motorcycle to cost around Rs 30,000 more than the normal variant, priced at Rs 1.68 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

- RE classic 500 (dessert storm) no mods 2014It's a great bike. There are no modifications done. With proper servicing and normal maintenance this will keep going. The power and pickup is nice. Easily overtakes other vehicles at 80kmph also. Is stable on highways. Adding a backrest could help pillion rider in long rides. I usually drove without pillion for long rides.
