It is the first manufacturer to issue a recall after the recent incidents involving EVs catching fire

Okinawa has issued a voluntary recall for 3215 units of the Praise Pro electric scooter. This comes just a day after an Okinawa showroom in Tamil Nadu burst in flames due to a reported EV fire. Previously, incidents of electric scooters from the Rajasthan-based manufacturer catching fire have been reported across the country.

Okinawa would be checking the batteries for loose connectors or any damage. The manufacturer has stated that such damages will be repaired free of charge at any Okinawa authorised dealership across the country. The company’s statement also mentions that it is working closely with its dealer partner, and the customers will be contacted individually.

This is the first time a manufacturer has issued a recall ever since incidents of EVs catching fire have been reported across the country. Moreover, Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant also asked manufacturers to recall EV batches involved in such fire incidents.

After the Ola Electric S1’s and Jitendra EV’s accident involving 20 EVs catching fire in Nashik, the Road Transport Ministry has ordered a probe and also roped in the Centre for Fire Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES), a wing of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

While Ola Electric and other manufacturers are yet to disclose the cause of the fire, a manufacturer issuing a recall to probe and investigate the incidents is definitely a welcome move. Hero Electric too has started with its ‘Battery Care Month’ for April 2022.
