Triumph Tracker 400 vs Triumph Scrambler 400 X: Differences Explained

These two 400cc bikes from Triumph may seem somewhat similar but there are several important differences. We explain

Triumph has launched the all-new Tracker 400 in the UK. At GBP 5,745 (around Rs 6.95 lakh), it is GBP 200 (around Rs 24,000) more affordable than the Triumph Scrambler 400 X in the UK. While both bikes are built with rough-roading capabilities, they are aimed at two distinct types of riders. Here are all the differences between the two bikes:

Design

The Triumph Tracker 400 looks much leaner and more aggressive. It features a flat, elongated seat, compact fuel tank, tight tail section, and minimal bodywork that give it a proper flat-tracker stance. Along with this, other elements like the round LED headlamp, and tracker-style side panels enhance its retro racing look. The bike also gets a flatter, and wider handlebar - for a slightly aggressive riding position, as the rider sits with the elbows out.

The Triumph Scrambler 400 X, on the other hand, has a taller, and more rugged stance, with a larger front wheel, longer mudguards, and protective bits like an engine bash plate, and knuckle guards. These bits give it a classic scrambler identity. It also gets a taller, braced handlebar which should be easy to reach while stand-up riding on the trails. That said, both bikes still use the same twin-exit exhaust which was first seen on the Scrambler 400 X.

Engine

Both motorcycles are powered by the same 398.15cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine, but with slightly different tuning. The Tracker 400 gets a sportier state of tune, similar to the Triumph Thruxton 400, producing around 42PS and 37.5Nm. It should offer a sharper and more rev-happy power delivery - important for frantic flat-tracking.

The Scrambler 400 X makes slightly less power at 40PS, but still offers a strong low and mid-range performance, making it easy on the trail where low-end performance is crucial. Both bikes come with a six-speed gearbox and a slip-and-assist clutch.

Underpinnings

Under the skin, the two share a similar steel tube frame. However the Tracker 400 uses a similar suspension setup as the Triumph Speed 400, with similar 130mm front and 140mm rear wheel travel. The Tracker 400 also runs on 17-inch wheels at both ends but with 110-section front, and a 150-section rear, block pattern Pirelli MT-60RS tyres.

Being an off-road centric bike, the Scrambler 400 X’s suspension setup offers 150mm of wheel travel at both ends. Along with this, it also gets a larger, 19-inch front, and a 17-inch rear alloy wheel combo. Just like the Tracker 400, Scrambler also runs on block pattern tyres, 100-section front and 140-section rear tyre - both Metzeler Karoos.

Features

Feature-wise, both bikes offer modern essentials like full-LED lighting, a semi-digital instrument cluster, switchable traction control, and dual-channel ABS. Being an off-road focused bike, the ABS can also be turned off on Scrambler 400 X. While it doesn’t mention explicitly on the official site, we reckon the Tracker 400 to also have the same feature. Both bikes miss out on smartphone connectivity.

Verdict

While the Triumph Tracker 400 and the Scrambler 400 X are built for very different style of riding. The Scrambler 400 X offers decent off-road capability and is well suited for riders who want a comfortable, go-anywhere retro motorcycle that can handle rough roads and light trails with ease. The Tracker 400, on the other hand, is a sporty machine that makes light work of dirt roads, and is designed to look the part of a factory custom. It may not be as capable as the Scrambler 400X, but the whole point is to look cool, which the Tracker 400 delivers well.

A bike full of character

I like the character of the engine, it's free revving and response. The seating position is upright and relaxing. I'm 6'2 and for my height the 835mm seat is great. It's nimble and easy to maneuver as well. My ownership experience has been great so far Mileage is slightly lower than expected. Bike is giving around 24kmpl in the city and 32 kmpl on the highway if riden at 100kmph. On the maintenance front there are no major issues just regular wear and tear replacements. I would recommend this bike to someone who's looking for a fun to ride bike which is easy to handle in the city and is comfortable on long rides with the ability to handle mild offroad trails. If the character of the bike and the way it makes you feel is important, the Scrambler 400x is the bike to get. Read More

Beginner friendly scrambler

It looks good and good for daily commute and short tours. The mileage of the bike is good .Bike is light weight which makes it easy to handle in heavy traffic. Pillion seat is comfortable for short tours. Ride is good and fine. Sometimes it lacks power in higher speeds especially at highways. Its great for daily ride and commute. The mileage is great. I had some issues with the mirror which got fixed after 1 did service. Otherwise it was a pretty fun to ride bike. Yes, absolutely i would recommend this bike to someone who wants to use it as a daily ride and want to go for short tours on it. The bike is comfortable and very beginner friendly. Finding triumph service centre can be tough if that's not an issues, one should consider this bike.Read More

Scramber 400X User Review

I was looking for a tall bike because I'm 6.2 feet. I want my bike to fit my lookings. Scrambler perfectly fits me. It attracted me with its looks. I explored multiple options like, Harley Davidson X440, Himalayan 450, Scram 411, Xpulse 210, Yezdi Adv. But they didn't suits me. After all confusions, watched reviews in youtube and read it. Then I confirmed this is my bike. Comfort for the rider is top notch, no back pain. Can ride 100kms easily in one stretch. Smooth like a butter. Performance is really admiring. But pillion comfort is somewhat bad. Hard and small seat. It goes very smooth till 120, after that you can feel the vibration in handle bar and wind blast. Definitely I'll recommend to the persons who are tall like me. It attracts everyone, whenever I ride the bike or park the bike, there will be atleast 3 to 5 persons look at the bike for sometimes. I got compliments on it also. But If a person is not that much, this is not for them. Height and weight they cannot manage.Read More

My time with Scrambler 400X

I wanted a bike that feels relaxed on highways, strong enough for quick overtakes and comfortable on bad roads. The Scrambler's build quality, riding posture and stylish design made the choice easy. After riding around 10,000km, the ride has been soo much satisfying. Suspension handles rough patches well, stable handling, power delivery and mileage is decent. There is no major complaints so far Yes, I would definitely recommend it to riders looking for a premium, comfortable bike for daily use and long weekend rides. It suits best for experienced riders, as it feels a bit heavy for beginners .Read More
