According to the manufacturer, both the G 310 R and G 310 GS suffer from an issue related to the chassis and side stand

BMW Motorrad has issued for a recall for the G 310 R and G 310 GS bikes in the USA. As per the German manufacturer, both the bikes suffer from an issue with the frame that encloses the side stand which could possibly break or get damaged after repeated use. In order to prevent any rider incidents related to this issue, BMW has recalled 2,376 units of the BMW G 310 R and the BMW G 310 GS.

All affected BMW G 310 R and GS owners will be notified and are expected to visit their nearest showroom to get the issue rectified free of cost. BMW Motorrad USA will begin the recall from 7th August 2018. If the issue is severe, the firm will replace the entire frame on the bike and if it isn’t, dealerships will install a reinforced plate along with a new side stand for all customers.

BMW’s unique backwards-tilted engine is shared by both bikes. It’s a 313cc fuel-injected, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder mill which produces 35PS of power and 28Nm of peak torque. Power is transmitted to the rear wheel via a 6-speed gearbox.

Both the R and the GS are built on the same tubeless steel frame with a bolted sub-frame as its core structure. The frame is supported by USD front forks and a monoshock unit at the rear. However, owing to the GS’ adventure-focused nature, its front suspension gets 180mm of travel as opposed to the R’s 140mm. At the rear too, the GS offers 180mm of travel against the R’s 131mm. Braking duties are handled by a 300mm front disc with a radial caliper and 240mm rear disc, with ABS offered as a standard. However, on the GS, the ABS is switchable.

While the R and the GS are being recalled in the USA, the Indian units which will start delivery next month won’t be affected by this defect.
