Bajaj Chetak: All You Need To Know

All the important details about Bajaj’s first electric scooter

Bajaj Auto is India’s first major two-wheeler manufacturer to take the plunge into electric mobility. It has done this by creating its Urbanite electric divison and unveiling the Chetak electric scooter. We’re here to break down the new e-scooter for you.

Same Old But Brand New

The first thing you’ll notice about the Chetak is how it looks. And it looks good. Bajaj has drawn inspiration from the original Chetak and the end result is a curvaceous and handsome scooter. The sheet metal body panels are available in both matte and glossy finishes, with a total of six colours on offer. LED DRLs, a handlebar-mounted LED headlight, apron-mounted LED turn signals and a central grille element give the scooter an attractive fascia. Fit and finish levels look great, and the alloy wheels look smart too. 

Fancy Frills

In addition to the aforementioned LED lighting, the Chetak also gets a fully-digital LCD instrument cluster. Bluetooth connectivity is on offer as well, letting users locate their vehicle, protect it from theft, and manage music and phone calls. Regenerative braking, mobile phone charging, reverse assist and riding modes are also on offer, and we expect the Chetak to get at least CBS, if not ABS.

Motor Mania

Suspension at both ends is a single-sided affair, with a tubular steel design at the front while the rear swingarm is a cast aluminium unit. The Chetak rolls on 12-inch alloy wheels, with a front disc brake and rear drum brake. The powertrain has been developed with inputs from German electronics giant Bosch, and a 4kW traction motor is deployed to drive the rear wheel.

Range Relief

The most important question when it comes to any electric vehicle - the range. Bajaj claims that the Chetak’s lithium-ion battery pack will allow it to go 95km on a full charge in Eco mode, while Sport mode brings it down to 85km. Bajaj says that this is a real-world range number and not an idealistic estimate. No details have been revealed yet about the battery capacity or the charging time.

How To Buy One

The official launch of the scooter will take place in mid-November to early December, with deliveries slated to begin in January. The Chetak will be sold through Bajaj’s Pro-Biking dealership network across the country, and deliveries will first start in Pune followed by Bengaluru, with the rest of the country set to follow suit afterwards.
