Sixteen years after its rise to stardom in the iconic film Dhoom, the mighty Suzuki Hayabusa was discontinued in India in 2020 for failing to meet BS6 emission norms. We were still lucky because Europe stopped getting the bike way back in 2018. Now, though, yet another set of fresh rumours claims the legendary ‘Busa will be making a comeback next year.
Earlier rumours spoke about a bump up in displacement and an all-new chassis, but COVID-19 has forced everyone to tighten their belts, so the upcoming 2021 Hayabusa will feature a much milder set of updates. The engine will most likely continue to displace 1,340cc but it will breathe through revised intake and exhaust systems, allowing it to meet Euro 5 emission norms. Despite becoming greener, the engine should continue to churn out around 200PS.
The inline-four motor will continue to be housed in the same frame as earlier, though suspension and electronics will be brought up to date. Expect a suite of IMU-assisted rider aids to keep the ‘Busa relevant, and possibly even electronic suspension. As far as looks are concerned, we suspect Suzuki will style the new Hayabusa along the lines of the Concept GSX displayed in 2015. So the bike should retain its bulbous form factor but will get updated lights to tell it apart.
The good news is that if Suzuki updates the ‘Busa to comply with Euro 5 norms, it will automatically also become BS6 compliant, meaning a return to the Indian market is very much on the cards. Watch this space for more…
