The single-cylinder engine is in the same state of tune as the G 310 R

BMW’s highly-anticipated G 310 GS baby-adventure bike has made its public debut at the ongoing 2016 EICMA. Based on the G 310 street bike, the new bike draws it design inspiration from the meaty R 1200 GS, but comes with the promise of offering some of its capabilities in a smaller, less complicated and not to mention, easier to manage package.

The bike sports compact proportions, making it a rare adventure bike that’s approachable for shorter riders. Additionally, it gets a 19-inch front wheel and while it uses the same tubular steel spaceframe as the G 310 R, the suspension’s spring travel has been increased. That said, BMW isn’t projecting this as an out-and-out adventure tourer, but an urban tourer that can occasionally be used on rough roads. The alloy wheels are an indication of its more concrete jungle-friendly nature. Up front are upside-down forks, while at the rear, the little GS gets a die-cast aluminium swing arm in conjunction with a spring strut that is mounted on it directly.

The riding posture is neutral and it also benefits from enduro-style foot-pegs where the rubber top is removable for added grip on tricky terrain. Also included are heated grips and a luggage rack that can be used to mount top-cases.

As expected, power comes from the same Euro4 engine as the G 310 R – a 313cc, liquid-cooled DOHC single-cylinder mill with 4 valves. The cylinder itself is tilted rearward, while the head is rotated by 180-degrees for better weight distribution and improved handling. Output figures come in at 34PS of power (9,500rpm) and 28Nm of torque (7,500rpm), so there haven’t been any changes compared to its roadster counterpart on that front, but the bike is around 11kg heavier. Dual channel ABS comes as standard and yes, it can be deactivated as well.

Like the G 310 R, the GS will also be built at the TVS plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. The G 310 GS joins BMW Motorrad’s adventure family and will sit below the R 1200 GS, S 1000 XR, F 800 GS and F 700 GS. Expect a launch in India towards the end of 2017 or early 2018.
