2017 Thruxton Expert Review

Recently, Triumph introduced its new modern classic machines at 2016 Auto Expo including the Thruxton R that is yet to be launched in India. The new motorcycle is technically and aesthetically advanced than the existing generation, retaining that racing heritage in the soul.

Besides the cosmetic updates, the all new Triumph Thruxton R gets a bigger 1,200cc engine that provides 62 percent more torque to the bike as compared to its previous generation. Further, the manufacturer has introduced custom inspiration kits for the motorcycle including a full-on Track Racer kit and the ultimate Cafe Racer kit.

Design

The all new Triumph Thruxton R has been redesigned to handle the enhanced performance. Also, the manufacturer has increased the level of dynamic handling and stability in the new model.

Along with the improved frame, you can see many changes in the chassis like Upside Down (USD) front forks and Ohlins gas charged rear shock absorbers.

Talking about the appearance, new Thruxton R has been styled with the 'Modern Classic' philosophy that has worked well. Starting from the front, you can see a classic round headlamp that sports a modern LED DRL and supported by a new stylish mount as well.

There is a classic twin-pod instrument cluster on the bike that again gets a modern touch with two LCD screens and a lot of information. The fuel tank also gets some new curves to gel with the new bullet seat and interesting side panels.

The beautiful detailing of the motorcycle includes a 'Monza' cap on the fuel tank (a first on any modern production bike), light weight aluminium bar-end mirrors, polished top yoke, clear anodised aluminium swingarm and much more.

Along with all these styles features, the bike comes in two colour options- Diablo Red and Silver Frost.

The Thruxton R has over 160 accessories to create your own special machine from the stock.

The Track Racer 'Inspiration' kit of the motorcycle includes a sculpted cockpit fairing, lower clip-ons, rear mudguard removal kit with compact tail lamp, Vans & Hines slip-on mufflers, knurled handlebar grips and authentic leather tank strap to provide it with a proper old school racing machine look.

On the other hand, the Cafe 'Inspiration' kit also gets signature triumph knee pads and a tinted fly screen in addition to all the features of Track Racer kit except the cockpit fairing.

Engine, Mileage & Performance

Powering the new Triumph Thruxton R is an all-new 1,200cc, liquid-cooled, parallel twin-cylinder engine that comes mated to a six-speed transmission. The 'low inertia - high performance motor features a lighter crank, 4-valves per head and airbox unique to the Thruxton R. All these features help the engine to operate at higher rpm than it does in the Bonneville T120.

The new engine comes equipped with Triumph's new ride-by-wire fuel injection, fed by authentic twin throttle bodies to deliver a better performance. In a higher state of tuning, the motor pumps out 112Nm of peak torque at just 4,950rpm and the figure is almost 62 percent higher than the previous generation motorcycle.

The company has also worked on the feel and sound of its British racing twin that now comes with a new up-swept twin megaphone exhausts to provide a thrilling sound with a rich and raw note that matches with the legendary name. The new Thruxton R further comes with features like engine immobilizer that ensures your motorcycle's security and a Slip-Assist clutch for smooth gear shifting.

Handling & Ride Quality

The chassis of new Thruxton R has been developed for better dynamic handling with new fully adjustable suspension set-up and Brembo braking system. The motorcycle runs on 17-inch classic spoke wheels with amazing Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa tyres, especially designed for track and road riding.

At the front, it gets adjustable Showa upside down forks in combination with Ohlins adjustable gas-charged shocks at the rear.

The high-performance braking system of the bike comprises of dual front and single rear floating discs with a Brembo monobloc caliper on each. Further, the braking system is assisted by Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) for safe braking at high speeds.

Further, the new Thruxton R comes with three selectable riding modes- Road, Rain and Sport for greater control. The bike also has switchable traction control to optimise the delivery of torque according to the requirements. The company presents a simple fingertip control scroll button for easy access to the key features of the new multifunctional console.

Features

The all-new Triumph Thruxton R comes equipped with some of the high-end safety features like ABS and Traction Control. Moreover, the general safety features of the bike include LED daytime running lamp, clearly visible LED tail lamp and grippy tyres.

To ride in different conditions with full control, it features three selectable riding modes that are pre-programmed for Road, Rain and Sport riding.
