Sale Of New Non-ABS, CBS Two-Wheelers To Be Illegal From 1 April 2019

Any two-wheeler above 150cc will be required to be equipped with ABS, while two-wheelers upto 125cc would need to come with at least CBS

Any two-wheeler above 150cc will be required to be equipped with ABS, while two-wheelers upto 125cc would need to come with at least CBS

  • The law was passed last year by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
  • It’ll be heavily enforced by RTOs nationwide.
  • Most bikemakers have already updated their lineup with the safety update.

Starting from 1 April 2019 (Monday), all non-ABS and CBS two-wheelers would be prohibited from RTO registration. The mandate was introduced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways last year and will be enforced by state-wide RTOs.

According to the law, any two-wheeler launched post 1 April 2018 and above 125cc would need to be equipped with ABS, while two-wheelers below had to have a combined braking system (CBS). While until today, the ruling was only directed towards new launches, starting from tomorrow all existing two-wheelers in any manufacturers’ lineup will need to get the braking system fitted.

As you can guess, this resulted in a slew of manufacturers updating their portfolio in the past year. For example, Royal Enfield periodically updated its entire range with dual-channel ABS throughout the year while TVS introduced the ‘Super Moto’ single-channel ABS system for its 150cc and above range recently.

We welcome the government’s decision to double down on motorcycle safety, especially considering the number of road accidents we see on Indian roads everyday. Both CBS and ABS provide a ton of safety to the rider. But what is it that separates them? And how do they actually work?
