One of the oldest mid size motorcycle manufacturers in India, Royal Enfield, is working on a new single-cylinder, 400cc engine. As per the Autocar Professional’s report, the new engine will be rebored on the existing 346cc mill, which powers the entire 350cc range of the company.

An industry expert associated with the project, revealed the information to Autocar Professional and said, “Royal Enfield is working to develop a new engine slightly bigger in displacement (measuring nearly 400cc) than its current 346cc, single-cylinder powertrain. It is essentially a substantial modification in the form of enhanced dimension, which also requires hard work on the front of new connecting rods, crankshafts and many other crucial areas, to its existing 346cc platform.”

Concentrated only on the midsized bike segment, Royal Enfield is one of the few companies providing bikes in the respective segment. Currently, all the RE bikes including Bullet, Thunderbird, Classic and their different models, comes equipped with two engine options. The smaller capacity engine is 346cc, single cylinder engine, powers the entire 350cc range with a power of 19.8bhp and 28Nm of peak torque at mere. The higher capacity option is a 499cc, single cylinder mill, powers the whole 500cc range with 26.1 - 27.2bhp of power and a torque of 41.3Nm at just 4,000rpm. However, the latest RE bike, Continental GT 535 uses a slightly more powerful 535cc single, rebored on the 499cc mill to deliver 29.1bhp. The engine will fill the gap between the range with a power output of around 22-23bhp.

With the new 400cc engine, There will be a new option for almost every model for the Royal Enfield cutomers and the company will price those models slightly higher than their respective 350cc models.
