The homegrown brand extended its lead with 78.20 lakh unit sales in FY2019

  • In comparison, Honda sold 59 lakh unit sales during the same period.
  • That's a new gap of 19.19 lakh unit sales between Hero MotorCorp and Honda.
  • Bajaj holds its position at third spot with a 26 per cent growth.
  • While TVS Motors chalked a growth of 12 per cent.

Hero MotoCorp extended its lead over its arch-rival HMSI (Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India) in terms of sales for the fiscal year 2018-2019. To put things into perspective, the former sold 78.20 lakh unit sales in contrast to Honda’s 59 lakh unit sales within the span of one year, helping it extend its lead over the Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer by 19.19 lakh unit.  In comparison, Hero MotoCorp roped in 75.87 lakh units while Honda posted a sale of 61.23 lakh units, a difference of around 14.63 lakh units, in FY17-18.

According to Hero, the credit for the sales success goes to the launch of the Xtreme 200R and the Destini 125 scooter. Adding to its success is the fact that the top-spec Destini 125 is Rs 2,470 more affordable than the base variant of the Activa 125. You essentially get a 125cc scooter for the price of a 110cc model. It goes without saying that the rest of Hero’s portfolio also contributed to the massive number. And Hero also enjoys a wider dealer network in India compared to Honda.

On the flipside, Honda cited that the increase in insurance costs led to lower sales in 2018 even during the festive season. The slowdown in the domestic market led to a surplus in inventory in the two-wheeler industry. To restore the balance, Honda cut down on its supplies so that its dealer network could push out existing stock.

Bajaj, on the other hand, stays strong in third spot with a growth of 26 per cent. It posted a sales figure of 42,36 lakh as opposed to 33,69 lakh unit sales in the corresponding year. TVS Motors chalked a growth of 12 per cent with 37.57 lakh units in 2018-19 compared to 33.67 lakh in the previous fiscal year.
