The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and its resultant lockdown have been brutal for auto manufacturers. With plants and dealerships shut, auto sales have rapidly dropped. However, with lockdown restrictions easing since the past month, auto sales seem to be picking up. An indicator comes from Hero MotoCorp who have released sales figures for August 2020.

The reason for the rise in sales according to the bikemaker is due to its two-wheeler production now operating at 100 percent capacity and having almost all of its dealerships open with social distancing norms and safety checks in place. According to Hero, it is witnessing strong demand in rural and semi-urban areas. The launch of the Xtreme 160R has also helped the bikemaker tap into the popular 160cc segment.

While sales are improving, Hero still has a long way to go. In terms of April to August year-to-date sales, Hero sold 1,662,233 two-wheelers in YTD FY21. This number is almost half of the 2,922,136 units it sold in YTD FY 20. Hopefully, automakers will be able to improve sales and recover the deficit in the upcoming festive season.
