  • The venture will spawn EVs designed and developed by Hero, but with Gogoro’s swappable batteries.
  • Hero’s upcoming electric scooter may compete with Ola’s electric scooter.
  • Hero will cater to the Indian market first before venturing into the global scene.

Hero MotoCorp’s plans of launching its own electric scooter with Taiwanese partner Gogoro's battery-swapping tech have been delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Late last month, the bikemaker dropped a bomb on the Indian two-wheeler segment by announcing a partnership with Taiwan-based battery-swapping infrastructure provider Gogoro. Hero has also been working on its very own electric scooter at its Global Centre Of Innovation and Technology in Jaipur, meaning it could launch the e-Maestro with Gogoro’s battery-swapping tech. It will offer both fixed and swappable battery models.

However, all plans for its product launch have now been pushed to the first quarter (January-March) of FY22. Stalling the scooter's development further is the company’s decision to temporarily shut down its manufacturing plants, parts production, and R&D facilities until May 16, 2021.

Meanwhile, the bikemaker has come up with innovative solutions such as virtual dealerships, in partnership with a Delhi-based deep tech company, Adloids. So you can now view Hero’s entire portfolio in the new virtual showroom, configure your chosen model, and even get a full-scale render right in your living room by simply scanning the QR code with your phone/tablet.

Timely strategies like these have kept the homegrown manufacturer ahead of the rest of the competition. Besides, Hero is confident of bouncing back in the second quarter of this year and making the most of what lies ahead.
