Affordable Ather Electric Scooter Based On The New EL01 Platform: Design Patented

    Quick Highlights

    • It’s the production version of the EL01 Concept that was showcased in August  this year

    • Gets a 14-inch front and a 12-inch rear wheel setup

    • Can accommodate battery sizes ranging from 2kWh to 5kWh

Bengaluru-based EV manufacturer Ather Energy introduced its new EL01 Concept, based on the EL01 platform a few months ago. Now, Ather has filed a design patent of the production version of the Concept electric scooter that was unveiled at  the Ather Community Day 2025 in August.

Even though the unveiled scooter was called a ‘Concept’, it looked pretty production-ready except for that really funky neon yellow colour scheme. Unsurprisingly, the concept too looks pretty similar, but there are some small changes. The front disc is absent, but then again, there’s no drum brake either.  So it’s likely that the design patent has excluded the front disc. Other noticeable differences include a slightly redesigned front fender, the addition of a side footrest, and rear-view mirrors. Design-wise, Ather seems to have taken a page out of Honda’s book, as the scooter has a neutral, family-oriented design, much like the Honda Activa. It features neatly designed body panels, sleek LED headlamp, single-piece seat, a pillion backrest, and neatly integrated indicators on the apron.

The EL01 concept had a floorboard mounted battery pack, and the platform itself is designed to accommodate battery sizes ranging from 2kWh to 5kWh. The concept was also equipped with a large 14-inch front and 12-inch rear alloy wheel setup, similar to what we have seen on the TVS Orbiter. The wheel design and the sizes appear to be the same in the design patent of the production version too.

Like the Ather Rizta, the concept scooter also offered generous underseat storage, which is expected to be carried over to the production model as well. In addition, Ather is likely to equip the scooter with its full suite of features. The concept was seen with a 7-inch TFT console and the latest features introduced with the recent Atherstack 7.0 software update. That said, the feature-set might vary, depending on the variant. Ather might also offer a front drum as an affordable variant.

The new electric scooter based on the EL01 platform can be launched either in mid-2026 or by the festive season towards the end of the year. Its expected starting price could be under Rs 1 lakh, and is expected to exist alongside Ather’s current lineup of electric scooters. According to the brand, the EL01 is a modular platform that can underpin multiple scooter iterations, ranging from a nimble city commuter, to a large maxi-scooter. However, those products will be launched later, in a phase-wise manner.

The production version of the Ather EL01 concept will take on the Vida VX2, TVS Orbiter, Ola S1X, and the Bajaj Chetak 3001. This will be a crucial product for the brand as it realised that most of its sales come from the family oriented Ather Rizta. So, the EL01 is expected to combine three crucial aspects for a successful e-scooter strategy - affordability, quality and practicality.
