A closer look at the mildly updated middleweight sports bike from Honda

We’re just done with the first quarter of 2021 and Honda is already on a big bikes launch streak. The latest two on the roster are the naked CB650R and the CBR650R. In this story, we’ll look at the CBR650R’s visual highlights and see what it offers.

For 2021, Honda has barely made any cosmetic upgrades to the CBR650R. It retains the primary design with a sharp front-end housing the slightly revised all-LED headlights with DRLs.

The handlebar appears to be slightly more forward, thereby resulting in a sportier riding stance.

Powering the BS6 Honda CBR650R is a 649cc liquid-cooled inline-four motor. Honda has detuned it to make 87PS at 12000rpm and 57.5Nm at 8500rpm, 1PS and 3Nm less than the BS4 bike. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox with a slipper and assist clutch.

On the features front, the bike gets a fully digital instrument cluster with a gear position indicator, odometer, tachometer, fuel level gauge, engine temperature and a shift-up indicator. For rider aids, Honda has equipped the CBR650R with Honda’s ESS (Emergency Stop Signal) technology to automatically activate the hazard lights during sudden braking, and an Ignition Security System (HISS) -- Honda’s lingo for an anti-theft system.

Holding everything in place is the same twin-tube frame. Suspension duties are done by adjustable Showa Separate Function-Big Piston (SSF-BP) USD forks and a monoshock at the rear.

Shedding speeds for the CBR650R is done by twin 310mm front discs and a 240mm rear disc. Dual-channel ABS comes standard.

The BS6 variant tips the weight scale at 211kg, which is 3kg more than the EU spec model and 1kg more than the BS4 bike.

It sits on 120/70-17 front and 180/55-17 alloys wrapped in Dunlop rubber.

At Rs 8,88,000 (ex-showroom), the BS6 version costs Rs 1.18 lakh more than the BS4 bike. Honda offers the CBR650R in Grand Prix Red and Matte Gunpowder Black Metallic colours. Just like all other big Honda bikes, the CBR650R will be available at BigWing dealerships only.
