The first electric scooter to be launched in the country after the easing of lockdown restrictions offers simple yet practical features
Ampere became the first brand to launch an electric scooter after the government eased lockdown restrictions imposed to contain the spread of the coronavirus. This electric scooter, called the Ampere Magnus Pro, is priced at Rs 73,990 (ex-showroom Bengaluru), but before you sign the dotted line, here’s everything you need to know about it:
Triple-digit Claimed Range
The Ampere Magnus Pro features two riding modes: Eco and Cruise. It is claimed to offer up to 100km in Eco mode whereas in Cruise mode, the range drops to 80km The buttons to switch modes are located on the right switchgear but it looks a little too crude. The 60V, 30Ah lithium-ion battery is removable, so you can simply detach it and take it to your workplace or home to get it charged. It takes 5-6 hours to charge completely and a fast charging option is also available.
City-friendly Performance
Ampere claims the Magnus Pro can reach a top speed of just 55kmph, thus making it ideal for use only within city limits. With the 1200W hub motor, it takes a leisurely 10 seconds to accelerate from 0-40kmph. A climbing angle of 13 degrees should be enough to go over flyovers without losing too much momentum. When the battery reaches 10 per cent, the Limp Home feature ensures it covers up to 10km before the battery gives up.
Loaded with Practical Features
The Ampere Magnus Pro features LED DRL, bulb-type indicators and tail lamp. Even though the bezel is large, the instrument cluster LCD display is pretty regular sized. While there’s no smartphone connectivity, it makes up for it by offering simpler yet practical features like apron-mounted storage space with integrated USB port, utility hook on the apron, keyless entry, and even anti-theft alarm. It also gets a parking brake to secure the scooter when parked on an inclined road. The underseat storage seems large enough to accommodate a small full-face helmet and a couple of water bottles. It also gets an LED light for added convenience. The 450mm legroom should be enough for riders of above-average height.
Standard Underpinnings
The Ampere Magnus Pro employs a telescopic front fork and twin rear preload-adjustable shock absorbers. The 10-inch steel wheels are shod with tubeless tyres and are brought to a halt using 130mm drum on both ends with a Combined Braking System (CBS) as standard. At 150mm, the ground clearance is good enough to go over our pothole-riddled roads with ease.
Pricing, Rivals & Availability
The Ampere Magnus Pro is available in four colours and priced at Rs 73,990 (ex-showroom Bengaluru), which makes it Rs 29,291 more expensive than its lead-acid powered counterpart, the Ampere Magnus 60. Ampere says it is currently only available in Bengaluru but will soon be sold in other cities via its 200 dealerships across the country. As per Ampere, the average running cost of this electric scooter is Rs 2,700, which can be recovered in three years. Bookings are already open on its website for a token amount of Rs 2,999. The warranty for key components stands at three years and can be extended for an additional two years for Rs 2,700.
As far as competition is concerned, it goes up against the Gemopai Astrid Lite and Okinawa Ridge Plus. For around the same price, you can also get petrol-powered scooters such as the Honda Activa 125, Suzuki Access 125 and Hero Maestro Edge 125.
