This is the 3rd addition to Kawasaki’s Versys range

Just when you thought adventure tourers were quite literally a big boy game, along came the Royal Enfield Himalayan. More recently, BMW just revealed the G 310 GS at EICMA and now, the Japanese have introduced a new sub-500cc contender for the segment as well – the Versys-X 300!

No one is a stranger to Kawasaki’s ability to utilize an engine platform and the baby-Versys is another example of that ingenuity. It uses the same 296cc parallel-twin engine as the Ninja 300/Z300, packaged in a different chassis and design, with a power output of around 34PS. It rides on a 19-inch front spoke wheel wrapped in a 100/90-section trail tyre with a 17-inch rear wheel shod with 130/80-section rubber. The chassis is supported by a long-travel suspension setup with 41mm telescopic forks up front and a gas-charged Uni-Trak monoshock at the rear.

Also on offer is an assist and slipper clutch, and not to mention, standard ABS. The instrument cluster features a large, analogue rev counter in the middle that shares some real estate with the gear indicator and clock. An LCD panel displays the digital speedometer, dual trip meters and fuel gauge, along with readouts for the average and instant fuel efficiency. Also included is an eco-riding indicator and the bike reportedly has a tank range of nearly 390km.

The looks, while quirky are still very approachable and the bike seems well-proportioned. The bike also sports a medium sized windshield, and what seems to be a generously-sized saddle. A luggage board is included at the rear and Kawasaki will offer the bike with two optional packs – Urban and Adventure. 'Urban' adds hand guards, a tank pad, a center stand, and a 30-litre top box, while the 'Adventure' kit adds the centre stand, tank pad, tubular engine guards, and 17-litre panniers.

While Kawasaki will offer this as a gateway model to the Versys family, it’s safe to say that a lot of seasoned riders have also been waiting for an adventure tourer with more modest proportions. Will it come to India? Well, we're hopeful!
