Overview
BMW Motorrad recently unveiled the upcoming F 450 R, a middleweight naked streetfighter based on the same technical platform as the F 450 GS. However, unlike its adventure sibling, the F 450 R gets road-focused chassis tuning, a shorter wheelbase and a sportier riding setup. Its design takes inspiration from the larger S 1000 R, while power comes from a newly developed 420cc parallel-twin engine.
The F 450 R is aimed at riders looking for a compact, sporty motorcycle that can offer strong performance while remaining practical for everyday use. BMW will offer the motorcycle in four variants: Base, Exclusive, M Sport and M Sport with Innovation Package.
Design
The BMW F 450 R gets a compact and aggressive design inspired by the larger S 1000 R. The front end features a sharp profile with full-LED lighting, while the sculpted fuel tank and exposed mechanical components give the motorcycle a sporty naked-bike appearance.
The bike also gets an under-belly exhaust system, which keeps the side profile relatively clean. Overall, the F 450 R has a more road-focused and performance-oriented appearance compared to the F 450 GS.
Features
The F 450 R comes equipped with a 6.5-inch TFT instrument console with connected technology. It supports features such as navigation, music controls and SMS and call alerts. A USB-C charging port and heated grips are also offered as standard.
Its electronics package includes Rain, Road and Dynamic riding modes, along with ABS Pro, traction control, brake control and engine drag torque control. The M Sport variants add Riding Modes Pro and Shift Assistant Pro, while the top-spec M Sport with Innovation Package also gets BMW’s Easy Ride Clutch. The motorcycle also features a reversible shift pattern, allowing riders to switch to a racing-style gear-shift setup for occasional track use.
Engine And Performance
The F 450 R is powered by the same 420cc parallel-twin engine as the F 450 GS, but BMW has tuned it specifically for road riding. The engine produces 48 PS at 8,750rpm and 43Nm at 6,750rpm.
It uses a 135-degree crankpin offset and a balance shaft, which BMW says helps provide a distinctive engine character while keeping vibrations under control. Around 80 percent of the maximum torque is available from 3,000rpm, which should give the motorcycle strong low- and mid-range performance.
The engine is paired with a six-speed gearbox and chain drive. Shift Assistant Pro is available on all variants except the base model, while the optional Easy Ride Clutch can automatically operate the clutch depending on engine speed. BMW claims a fuel efficiency of 3.8 litres per 100km, which works out to around 26kmpl. The bike gets a 14-litre fuel tank.
Underpinnings
The F 450 R uses a tubular steel space frame, with the engine acting as a stressed member. BMW has given it a shorter wheelbase and road-specific chassis tuning to make the motorcycle agile and easy to handle.
Suspension duties are handled by a 43mm KYB inverted fork at the front and a KYB monoshock mounted to an aluminium double-sided swingarm at the rear. An optional Sport Suspension adds adjustable compression and rebound damping to the front fork, while the rear shock gets adjustable preload and rebound damping.
The motorcycle rides on 17-inch cast-aluminium alloy wheels, shod with 110/70-R17 front and 150/60-R17 rear tyres. Braking hardware includes a 310mm front disc with a Brembo four-piston caliper and a 240mm rear disc with a ByBre single-piston caliper.
The standard seat height is 790mm. BMW will also offer optional seats that can lower the riding position by 15mm or raise it by 20mm.
Expected Price And Rivals
The BMW F 450 R could be launched globally by mid-2027 and is expected to be priced at around Rs 4.60 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. If launched here, it will become BMW Motorrad’s road-focused, most affordable motorcycle and will compete with the Aprilia Tuono 457.
With its 48 PS, 420cc twin-cylinder engine, premium hardware and S 1000 R-inspired styling, the F 450 R brings the F 450 platform into the middleweight naked-bike segment.
