Thunderbird Expert Review

Triumph is one of the oldest motorcycle brands serving the world since 1984. The British giant is spreading its roots in the Indian superbike market by offering a wide range. Currently, it offering motorcycles in 5 different segments, out of these, Triumph Thunderbird Storm is a cruiser. It is a value for money bike and gets a dual headlight, fuel tank mounted instrument cluster, detachable pillion seat and blacked out looks, making it one of the best machines available in its class.

The motorcycle is powered by a 1,699cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC, parallel-twin, 270 degrees firing interval engine that comes mated to a 6-speed, helical type gearbox, which is further linked with a wet, multi plate type clutch. The mill churns out a maximum power of 96.7 bhp at 5,200 rpm with a peak torque of 156 Nm at 2,950 rpm. Thunderbird Storm moves on 120/70 R19 front and 200/50 R17 rear tyres wrapped on cast aluminium 5-spoke alloy wheels. For stopping power, twin 310mm floating discs with Nissin 4-piston fixed calipers are present at the front wheel, whereas the rear wheel gets single 310mm disc with Brembo 2-piston floating caliper. The suspension system consists of Showa 47mm forks with black lowers at the front and Showa black spring twin shocks with 5-position adjustable preload at the rear.

The body dimensions of the motorcycle are 2,340mm x 8,80mm x 1,120mm (L x W x H) with a wheelbase and minimum ground clearance of 1615mm and 140mm respectively. It has a fuel storage capacity of 22 liters that comes in handy with its mileage of around 19 kmpl. The company also offers a two-year unlimited mileage warranty with the motorcycle along with a 12-month unlimited mileage warranty on replacement parts.

The front fascia of Thunderbird Storm carries a round twinned headlights and bullet shaped side indicators providing a classic look to the cruiser. The fuel tank has mounted instrument console over it that houses an onboard computer, clock, twin trip meters, fuel gauge, compact rev counter and self-cancelling side indicators. Although the instrument cluster looks good on the tank, but the rider might face problem in looking at the instrument cluster as he has to remove his eyes from the road, which is unsafe while riding at high speeds. The pillion seat on the Storm is detachable for lone riding. The fat rear tyre complements the short fender that holds a stylish tail light, side indicators and light reflector.

Coming to the dimensions, the bike is 2,340mm long, 880mm wide, 1,120mm and has a wheelbase of 1,615mm. The kerb weight of 339 kg and seat height of 700mm enhances the riding characteristics of the motorcycle. It comes in two colors - Jet Black and Matt Graphite.

The mill is mated with a 6-speed, helical type gearbox and a wet, multi plate type clutch system. The bike uses a sequential fuel injection system with its progressive throttle linkage that enhances power delivery and throttle response. It has a fuel tank capacity of 22 liters and around 19 kmpl of mileage. The service interval of the motorcycle is 10,000 kilometers.

Handling & Ride Quality

Thunderbird Storm has a rear fat tyre that offers good grip on the road. Moreover, disc brakes at both ends assisted by ABS extract a good stopping power.
