The Japanese manufacturer is looking to enter the EV space in India

While Yamaha is well known for its petrol-powered motorcycles in India the same can’t be said about its EV offerings. That might just change soon because Yamaha is now conducting a feasibility study and evaluating the chances of launching electric two-wheelers in India.

Yamaha Motor R&D India MD Yasuo Ishihara opines that it isn’t difficult to transfer some of Yamaha’s internationally sold electric vehicles to India and that EVs cannot completely replace the current petrol-powered vehicles. Traditional internal combustion engines get the dough for Yamaha two-wheelers in India and the brand is working on developing more efficient engines for the future.

Apart from launching e-scooters and motorcycles, Yamaha is also assessing future investments in power units and batteries with other partners for infrastructure development. Back in 2019, Japan’s big four--Yamaha, Kawasaki, Honda and Suzuki--announced their collaborative effort to introduce a replaceable battery system. Moreover, having a well-developed infrastructure will help in reducing range anxiety.

The Indian auto industry is expected to have 30% electric fleet by 2030. However, it is yet to be cemented as the pandemic has been causing a noticeable delay.
