Triumph Bonneville T40 vs T4: Differences Explained
Two Bonnevilles: the fully loaded T40 or the more affordable T4? We analyse:
Triumph has launched the Bonneville T40 in India, along with the T40 Black and the more affordable T4. All three share the same 350cc engine and classic Bonneville design, but there are some differences between the T40 and the T4, mainly in terms of colours, and features. Here are the details:
Design And Colours
The T4 looks exactly like the T40 range, so you get the same teardrop fuel tank, round LED headlight, spoked wheels, twin rear shocks and peashooter exhaust. The difference arises in the shades.
The Triumph Bonneville T40 comes in three two-tone schemes: Aegean Blue with Fusion White, Meriden Blue with Tangerine Orange, and New England White with Jet Black. These get hand-painted pinstripes and 3D Triumph logos on the tank, which add to the premium feel. The Bonneville T40 Black arrives in just a single dark shade but gets all of the premium bits like the standard T40. The T4 keeps things simpler, with three single-colour options: Phantom Black, Carnival Red and Competition Green.
Console And Features
This is where the two bikes differ the most. The T40 gets a 4-inch circular TFT console with smartphone connectivity, including call and SMS alerts, music controls and proper Google Map-based navigation. It also comes with Heritage Mode for those who like an analogue-style look for the screen. Riders can save routes, add waypoints and import GPX files, through the Triumph navigation app.
The T4 gets a more basic colour LCD console. It still offers smartphone connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation, but it misses out on the TFT's Heritage Mode and Google Maps mirroring.
Cruise Control And Safety
The T40 gets IMU-aided electronic rider aids like five riding modes (Road, Rain, Eco and two customisable modes), lean-sensitive cornering ABS, traction control, and cruise control. The simpler T4 only makes do with basic traction control and ABS with three ride modes to choose from.
Engine
There are no changes here. Both bikes use the same liquid-cooled 350cc single-cylinder TR-Series engine, producing 29 PS at 7,000 rpm and 31 Nm at 5,500 rpm.
Price
The T4 costs Rs 2,54,999 (ex-showroom, Delhi), while the T40 is priced at Rs 2,79,999, a difference of Rs 25,000.
Which One Should You Choose?
The Bonneville T40 is the one to pick if you want the full experience: the feature-rich TFT console, cruise control, cornering ABS and the colourful two-tone paint schemes. The T4 makes more sense if you want the Bonneville look and the same engine at a lower price, and you can live without the extra tech. Since the engine is identical, you won't be giving up any performance by choosing the cheaper bike.
