Tork Motorcycles claims the T6X will have over 100km range in a single full charge and can run at a top speed of 95km/h

It so happens that we may get to ride electric bikes in India before we get to drive electric cars. Reports suggest the country's own electric bike maker, Tork Motorcycles, may launch its electric motorcycle – named T6X – in the coming months. You may not be aware of the brand, but those following motorcycle racing – especially Isle of Man TTX-GP or the TTX-GP Championship – would be.

Tork Motorcycles was founded in 2009 by Kapil Shelke, who is a mechanical engineer from the University of Pune. You did not get to hear about the company earlier since it was racing its bikes in various races around the world. The company has been quite successful too, since as its achievements include podium finishes at the 2009 Isle of Man TTX-GP and the 20101 TTX-GP Championship.

Now, the motorcycle company has turned its attention towards creating a mass-market electric bike. The T6X, it says, will be comparable to any 125cc bike in India. It has claimed the bike's range on a single full charge to be over 100km, and its top speed to be 95km/h. However, the company did not reveal the power figures of the T6X. Tork Motorcycles claims that it has sufficient funding to wrap up R&D and commence production of the T6X. It has received funding from a number of investors – a list that includes Bhavish Agarwal and Ankit Bhati, the founders of Ola cabs. The electric motorcycle maker aims to sell 10,000 bikes in the first year of sale.

Tork said that while it has designed and built the chassis and body parts of the T6X by itself, it has sourced cycle parts from component manufacturers. Special tyres will be made for the T6X by CEAT Tyres, and the bike will transfer the power from its motor to the rear tyre using a chain. Some of the features the T6X will haveare on-board navigation, cloud connectivity, full digital display and quick charge.

The electric bike maker plans to launch the T6X in Pune, Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad. It has said the T6X will be launched in Pune, Bengaluru and Delhi first, followed by launches in Mumbai and Hyderabad. It also aims to set up charging stations in several locations and has set a goal of setting up at least 100 charging stations per city.
