While several manufacturers are preparing to launch electric motorcycles in India, Ather Energy is taking a different approach. In a recent investor’s presentation, the company has confirmed that it will continue focusing on electric scooters for the near future, with its upcoming EL01 scooter platform taking centre stage.
EL Platform Is The Current Focus
Speaking to investors, Ather Energy co-founder and CEO Tarun Mehta said the company's immediate priority is to launch and expand its new EL platform. After the first scooter arrives, Ather plans to introduce one or two more products based on the same architecture over the next year.
The EL platform will be unveiled on August 29, 2026, and is expected to underpin Ather's future mass-market electric scooters.
Electric Motorcycle Can Wait
Although Ather had previously announced that it was developing a dedicated electric motorcycle platform, codenamed Zenith, Mehta said the company is in no hurry to enter the segment.
Instead, Ather wants to observe how the electric motorcycle market develops, understand customer demand and identify which segments gain traction before launching its own product. He also confirmed that an Ather electric motorcycle is more than two years away.
Rivals Are Charging Ahead
Ather's cautious approach comes even when brands like Royal Enfield (Flying Flea), Ultraviolette, Revolt, Oben, Bajaj Auto and Hero MotoCorp are expanding or developing their electric motorcycle.
Meanwhile, Ather confirmed that production of the EL platform has already begun, homologation is complete and high-volume trials are currently underway ahead of its launch.

With electric scooters continuing to dominate India's EV market, Ather's decision to strengthen its scooter portfolio first makes sense. Waiting for the electric motorcycle segment to mature could also help the company better understand what buyers expect before making its entry.
