BREAKING: Triumph Thruxton 400 Launched

Triumph has officially launched the Thruxton 400 in India at Rs 2,74,137 (ex-showroom) expanding its single-cylinder 400cc line-up. The Triumph Thruxton 400 brings a cafe racer flavour to the brand’s growing small-capacity range - that is made here in India under the Bajaj-Triumph partnership.

Design

The Triumph Thruxton 400 draws heavy design inspiration from the Speed 1200 RR, having a very similar semi-fairing that wraps around a round headlamp. Clip-on handlebars, bar-end mirrors, and a windscreen complete the front; while the rear gets a single-piece seat, revised tail section, new tail-light, and body coloured pillion seat cowl.

The fuel tank has also been redesigned for a more slender profile (tank capacity same as Speed 400), and it gets a new brushed aluminium fuel filler cap - which has now been moved to the centre (other Triumph 400s have it toward the right side). It is offered in 4 colours: Lava Red Gloss and Aluminum Silver, Pearl Metallic White and Storm Grey, Metallic Racing Yellow with Aluminum Silver, and Phantom Black with Aluminum Silver.

Engine

Powering the Thruxton 400 is the same 398cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine shared with the Triumph Speed 400, Scrambler 400 X and XC. It makes 42PS at 9,000rpm 37.5Nm at 7,500rpm, and is paired to a 6-speed gearbox with a slipper clutch.

Notably, it makes 2PS more and is also more free-revving than before, but torque is the same. Both power and torque are made at 1,000rpm more than the Speed 400. Also the radiator has been redesigned to direct heat away from the rider. Those who are keen to know about the claimed mileage, the Thruxton 400 returns 27.02kmpl.

Underpinnings

The Thruxton is built on the same tubular steel frame as the Triumph Speed T4 and 400, but gets a new sub-frame. It gets a 43mm inverted fork with 140mm wheel travel, a new gas-charged monoshock with 130mm travel with preload adjustability (10mm more at both ends). It has a 300mm front disc with a radially mounted 4-piston caliper and a 230mm rear disc with a single piston caliper.

It rides on 17-inch alloy wheels with tubeless radial tyres: a 110-section front and 150-section rear. It has a 795mm seat height, 183kg kerb weight (4kg more than the Speed 400), and 13-litre fuel tank. The rider and pillion footpegs have also been moved slightly up and more to the rear. At 158mm, the ground clearance is 6mm lower than Speed 400's 164mm.

Features

The bike gets all LED lights, a semi-digital instrument console (the speedometer is analogue) and a USB charging port - shared with the Triumph Scrambler 400 X. Safety features include dual-channel ABS and switchable traction control, a slip-and-assist clutch to prevent the rear wheel from locking up under hard downshifts and for easier clutch lever operation.

Rivals

The Thruxton 400 does not have a direct rival in terms of engine size or even pricing. The only other café racer on sale is the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650, which is significantly more powerful, heavier, and costlier. For buyers considering an aggressive riding position but with retro appeal, the Thruxton 400 stands out as a unique choice.

The Triumph 400 Family

The Thruxton becomes the 5th motorcycle based on the brand’s 400cc platform, following the Speed 400 and T4, Triumph Scrambler 400 XC and X. The Thruxton carves out a niche for itself with its café racer nature, while the Speeds cater to commuters who also go on weekend rides, the Scramblers focused on the off-road and touring crowd.

Pricing

Interestingly, the Speed 400 recently got a price hike to Rs 2,50,551 - which is Rs 4,335 more, as the previous price (in July 2025) was Rs 2,46,216 (ex-showroom). If you were to know the difference between the latest Speed 400 price and the Thruxton 400 price, the Thruxton is Rs 23,586 more expensive.

While the cafe racer design looks beautiful, this genre of motorcycle will appeal only to riders who don’t mind the aggressive riding posture. While most of the sales will continue coming from the Speed 400 and its T4 variant, the Thruxton just makes the entire range a bit more wholesome, while aiding sales to a small extent. We feel the Rs 23,500-odd premium is a bit on the higher side, but many might argue you simply can’t put a price on gorgeous looks.
