The Suzuki Access 125 and TVS Ntorq 125 were the top gainers in terms of sales last month

  • Honda retains its crown but registers a negative growth rate.
  • The TVS Jupiter comes in at second place while the Access 125 trails in third spot.
  • TVS Ntorq 125 showcased the highest sales growth for the month at 61 per cent.

The two-wheeler sales report for the month of March 2019 has been released and from the looks of it, it’s been pretty disappointing for a couple of manufacturers. While Honda Activa managed to retain its crown as the best-selling scooter in India, it tumbled down the ladder in terms of overall sales, with a negative growth rate of 47 per cent. This gave TVS Motors the opportunity to pip the Japanese giant for the second spot for the very first time. Hero, on the other hand, led the charts yet again with its knight in shining armour - the Splendor - at the forefront.

The rapidly growing scooter division has been a major growth factor for two-wheeler manufacturers like TVS, Suzuki and of course, Honda.  And here are the top selling two-wheelers in the month of March.

Top Sellers:

Position Scooter March 2019 March 2018 Growth
1 Honda Activa 1.48 lakh 2.07 lakh -29%
2 TVS Jupiter 53,424 65,308 -18%
3 Suzuki Access 49,875 36,555 36%
4 Hero Destini 125 22,564 - -
5 TVS Ntorq 18,557 11,500 61%
6 Yamaha Fascino 15,739 15,944 -1%
7 Yamaha Ray 12,671 12,600 1%
8 TVS Pep+ 11,747 11,779 0%
9 Hero Pleasure 10,218 18,782 -46%
10 Suzuki Burgman 8,250 - -

No surprises here as the Honda Activa retained its crown as the highest-selling scooter in India. However, its sales dropped a massive 29 per cent in March 2019 compared to the corresponding month last year. To put things into perspective, the manufacturer recorded 1.48 lakh unit sales in March 2019 when compared to 2.07 lakh unit sales in March 2018.

Second position was maintained by the TVS Jupiter with 53,424 unit sales in March this year as opposed to 65,308 in the same month last year. As a result, the scooter’s sales dropped by 18 per cent compared to last year. The dwindling sales of the Jupiter worked in favour of its competition, the Suzuki Access 125, which has been inching closer every month. So much so that the 125cc veteran surpassed the Jupiter’s sales figures in January 2019. The Suzuki Access 125 roped in 49,875 units last month versus 36,555 in the same month last year, resulting in a growth of 36 per cent.

Top Gainers In March:

Although the Access 125 trumped the TVS Ntroq 125 in terms of monthly sales figures, it turns out that the latter has been gaining more momentum compared to the former in the last couple of months. In other words, the TVS Ntorq 125’s sales grew by 97 per cent and 61 per cent in the month of February and March 2019, respectively. On the contrary, the Access 125 grew by just 24 per cent and 36 per cent during the same period.

Hero MotoCorp, which forayed into the 125cc scooter segment with the Destini, has been doing pretty well for itself. It managed to record a respectable 22,564 unit sales last month and has been growing at a steady rate ever since its launch in October 2018.
