This Chinese parallel-twin is quicker than a BMW!

China is at the forefront of news everywhere these days, but today we’re going to be talking about the country for a different reason. Chinese manufacturer Benda wowed us all with its whacky-looking Asura 400 concept last year. The bike’s unconventional headlight design, large, sculpted body panels, and funky exhaust exits especially impressed us. But what really took the cake was the single-sided swingarm. On a 400cc bike!

Well, now we’ve managed to get our hands on some more details, with specifications of the Asura 400 being revealed. We already knew it’s powered by a 400cc parallel-twin, but now we know it displaces exactly 398cc and produces 36.7PS/32Nm. These numbers are par-for-course for single-cylinder bikes in the 300-400cc displacement like the Honda CB300R and BMW G 310 R, though other twin-cylinder offerings such as the Yamaha MT-03 and Kawasaki Z400 are more powerful than the Asura.

Nevertheless, a claimed sub-7 second 0-100kmph acceleration time makes it quicker than the BMW G 310 R, which we tested at 7.47 seconds. Benda also claims it’ll go on to a claimed top speed of 160kmph, which is once again on par with most of the single-cylinder competition. Other numbers we know are fuel-tank capacity - 16-litres - and ground clearance - 155mm. With a claimed efficiency figure of a little over 32kmpl, you can expect to comfortably manage 400-450km on a tankful, even 500 if you’re hypermiling.

Other premium bits on the bike include a colour TFT instrument console, LED lighting all around, an upside-down fork, and disc brakes at both ends with dual-channel ABS. We’ve also got our hands on its price. The top-end variant, at 29,800 yuan, works out around Rs 3.21 lakh. Unfortunately, it is highly unlikely to come to India anytime soon.
