The new facility will help Ather meet the projected demand for its scooters as it expands to other cities

  • Ather currently has a manufacturing facility in Bengaluru with a capacity of 30,000 to 35,000 units.
  • The new 4 lakh sq.ft. facility in Hosur will have much higher manufacturing capacity.
  • Ather currently sells electric scooters in Bengaluru and Chennai. It plans to start dealerships in 4 cities next year.

Ather has signed an MoU with the Tamil Nadu Government to open a new manufacturing facility in Hosur. This will be its second manufacturing facility after Wakefield, Bengaluru, which has an annual production capacity of 30,000 to 35,000 electric scooters. The Hosur facility will cover an area of four lakh square feet and provide jobs to more than 4,000 personnel in the next five years. Besides manufacturing electric scooters, the new facility will also make lithium-ion battery packs.

The new facility is expected to cater to the future demands for Ather e-scooters. The first two batches of Ather’s current product, the 450 electric scooter, have already been sold out and deliveries for the third batch are expected to commence by February next year. This demand is expected to increase as Ather plans to open dealerships in more cities in the next couple of years. It currently has dealerships in Bengaluru and Chennai and plans to open dealerships in Pune, Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai in 2020. Besides new dealerships, Ather also plans to make a more affordable electric scooter. This entry-level Ather is expected to reach dealerships in the next 12 to 18 months. Along with new dealerships, Ather is also looking at expanding its charging infrastructure, which it calls the Ather Grid. The current Ather Grid in Chennai has 10 charging points across the city with more being added.

The new manufacturing once operational, should reduce the worry about meeting demands and allow Ather to focus on setting up dealerships and charging infrastructure in more cities as well as developing newer models.
