Multistrada Expert Review

Ducati is known as the ‘Ferrari of Bikes’ in the two-wheeler industry. The company showcases iconic motorcycles that make their place among the top bikes in the World. The Italian manufacturer is world known for their innovations, Italian Style and sports victories. The company has won MotoGP repeatedly with their power packed machines. Ducati Multistrada is one of its most advanced innovation, which has been designed as a supermotard, but it can’t be given a single definition as it can perform four different roles. It can be changed to sport, touring, urban or enduro bike by using a controller on-board. It comes in three versions in India - Ducati Multistrada 1200, 1200 Touring, 1200S, 1200S Touring and 1200S Pikes Peak Edition.

The bike gets it power from 1198.4cc, dual spark, liquid cooled, 4-valve per cylinder, L- Twin engine that churns out a maximum power of 160hp at 9,500rpm and a peak torque of 136Nm at 7,500rpm. The machine is built on Ducati signature Trellis frame that provides a tough skeleton and massive body. The bike has a perfect aerodynamically shape. The suspension system of the bike includes an electric drive to adjust them electronically according to the purpose. The bike moves on the Pirelli Scorpion trail tyres of 120/70 17’’(front) and 190/55 17’’(rear). This beautifully crafted machine blessed with several advanced safety features including Ducati Safety Pack (DSP), which further includes Bosch 9ME ABS technology with three mapping, Ducati Traction Control (DTC) with eight operation levels and Cruise control.

Let's know more about this wonderful machine and get into the detailing of this bike and check out the features as well.

Design

Ducati Multistrada is constructed on Ducati signature Trellis frame with a large diameter, light gauge tubing with two central cast Aluminum sections and a sophisticated rear casted sub-frame. Being a touring bike, special dedication has been given towards the high-level comfort. The bike gets independent seats for both the rider and pillion, seats are designed to ensure excellent comfort during long journeys and also has a good ground reach. It's all black engine has been assembled well with the frame that complements the look of the bike. Its unique 17 inch, 3-spoke alloy wheels add more sporty genes to its character. On the rear end, a tyre hugger fender has been provided to prevent mud splashing on the tailgating vehicle. A stainless steel exhaust system has been employed that uses a catalytic converter and 2 lambda probe along with an aluminium tail pipe. The bike has been designed in a perfect aerodynamic shape.

The appearance of Ducati Multistrada is something that captivates instantaneously. The front profile of the bike has two air bays for air inlet that also adds to its aggressive stance. Above these, two perfectly focussed LED headlamps have been fixed that follows a pattern of racing sportsbike. Over these lamps, a wide adjustable visor glass (18 mm taller and 43 mm wider) has been equipped as a wind shield to offer superior wind protection. One can adjust the height of the glass by sliding it upward or downward and can lock it at a required position. Behind the visor, it holds an informative instrument cluster with two LCD screens. Its bigger LCD screen is like an on board computer, which enables to read all the required information like speed, rpm, fuel level etc. The screens continuously communicate with the sensors and ECU of the bike, so that the rider is informed about any malfunctions and system problems occurred (battery state, alarms, errors, etc.) in real time. The smaller LCD gives the information about its riding modes, ABS etc.

The rear view mirrors have been mounted on the handlebars. Safety panels equipped in front of the clutch and front brake lever integrate the clear lens LED blinkers. The sides of the fuel tank have been covered by an extended front fairing. There is a 3-liter of under seat storage capacity for the tool kit, first aid kit, user manual etc. The pillion rider is accommodated with strong grab rails for holding on to. A small LED tail lamp adds to the sporty look of the bike. A short mudguard has been mounted below its tail lamp with the rear blinkers. Besides a Red color, the S variant is also available with Iceberg White shade. Ducati Multistrada comes fitted with a 20 liter of a fuel  tank. The kerb weight of the bike comes to 192kgs that makes it heavy two-wheeled machine.

Engine, Mileage & Performance

Apart from a stunning design, the performance of the bike is also remarkable with second generation Testastretta DVT (Desmodromic Valve Timing) engine. With several new features, it has become smoother and more tractable. The bike is equipped with the same 1198.4cc, dual spark, liquid cooled, 4-valve per cylinder, L- Twin engine which is used with Ducati Panigale 1198 S. With a compression ratio of 12.5:1, the engine is tuned to produce a maximum power of 160hp at 9,500rpm and a peak torque of 136Nm at 7,500rpm. The power can be limited between 100- 150hp for different tasks. The top speed of the machine is around 250kmph. Bosch electronic fuel injection system with elliptical throttle bodies uses Ride-by-Wire technology for superior performance and deliver a precious amount of fuel. To balance the torque and speed requirements, the bike comes with a six-speed gearbox. As far as fuel economy is concerned, the bike returns the best mileage of 20kmpl, that doesn't go below 12.75kmpl. However, the machine throws out average fuel economy of 16.15kmpl approx. The engine meets with emission standard Euro 4 norms.

Handling & Ride Quality

The bike runs with grace over world's best Pirelli Scorpion trail tyres of 120/70 17’’(front) and 190/55 17’’ (rear) that come mounted over stylish alloy wheels which enhance grip and stability over all kinds of road surfaces. To control the unmatched power and speed, Ducati Multistrada has got dual disc brakes of 320mm dia on the front wheel and a 245mm disc brake on the rear wheel. The brakes are equipped with Bosch 9ME electronically adjustable Anti-lock Braking System which makes it more responsive. The iconic machine avails stress-free and comfortable ride as it combines with 48mm electronically adjustable Upside down suspension unit at the front and electronic spring pre-load adjustment at the rear end. Both the suspensions are integrated with Ducati Skyhook Suspension (DSS) technology.

Features

Ducati Multistrada has been assembled with various safety features like Ducati Safety Pack (DSP), which further includes Bosch 9ME ABS technology with three mapping, Ducati Traction Control (DTC) with eight operation levels and Cruise control. It has 320mm dual disc brakes at the front and 245mm disc brake at the rear wheel for effective braking. Its bigger LED headlights make vision clear even on the darkest of roads. The machine has a 12V power outlet under the seat that enables to charge peripheral devices in the case of an emergency. Its adjustable windscreen gives protection from wind and dirt.
