A manual gearbox, liquid-cooled motor & more; the Aera 5000 comes with a lot of firsts for the Indian electric motorcycle segment

After its unveiling which took place back in November 2022, Matter’s first electric bike finally has a name and a price tag. Christened the Aera 5000, the bike’s prices start from Rs 1,43,999 for the Aera 5000 and Rs 1,53,999 for the Aera 5000+ (both prices ex-showroom, including FAME II subsidy). Bookings for the bikes will commence this month, while deliveries should begin toward the end of the month. Prices for the Aera 4000 and 6000+ will be announced later.

Four variants of the Aera — 4000, 5000, 5000+ and 6000+ — have been put on sale at present. What the 5000 gets is a seven-inch touchscreen console, which should be a TFT unit. Along with that, there are additional features such as park assist, keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity, OTA updates and find me lights over the 4000. The 5000+, meanwhile, packs Lifestyle, Care and Connected packages. The top-of-the-line Aera 6000+ boasts a larger 6kWh battery pack with an extended range.

The Aera 5000’s IP65-rated 10.5kW, liquid-cooled, mid-mounted motor features a four-speed manual gearbox complete with a clutch. Matter claims an impressive 520Nm at the wheel, and like on some premium race bikes where you can physically see a dry clutch, the Matter e-bike features a transparent cover on the motor showcasing the gearbox in action.

The e-motorcycle gets a 5kWh battery pack which is liquid-cooled. It can provide a claimed range of 125km to 150km depending upon the variant chosen. It’ll support both standard and fast-charging via a common connector and is equipped with a standard on-board 1kW charger. Charging can also be done using a standard 5A, three-pin plug point. Using the on-board charger, it can be charged in less than five hours.

The Aera 5000’s silhouette is vaguely reminiscent of the Hero Xtreme 160R. That, though, is exactly where the similarities end as the Matter Aera 5000 is loaded to the brim with amenities like 4G connectivity, keyless operation, a seven-inch LCD touchscreen display with onboard navigation, and a nine-axis IMU.

The bike gets LED lighting throughout, including a bifunctional led projector. Comprehensive connective features like accident detection and auto-reply to calls while riding are also available. Its specialised smartphone app enables the owner to keep track of statistics including charge level, position, and ride analysis.

The Aera 5000’s frame is suspended on a telescopic fork, twin gas-charged shocks, and single disc brakes with dual-channel ABS. The motorcycle has been put together on a double cradle frame and features a little storage box with a USB charging point underneath the ‘tank’.

The Aera 5000 goes up against the Revolt RV 400 and the Tork Kratos. Yes, it’s more expensive than both but it packs things we’ve not really seen before. It’s loaded to the gills with features and packs more performance than both, something similar to 150cc bikes. So, given what the bike packs, the Aera 5000’s price tag sounds quite reasonable, and a fair bit lesser than the Rs 1.75 lakh (ex showroom) price we expected it to come in at. That’s one aspect we’re more than happy to be wrong about!
